A-Sides with Jon Chattman: Miguelito Keeps It Humble; Ace Reporter's New Lyric Music Video "Arrives"

In a pop world in which teen stars crash and burn, it's so refreshing to watch and listen to Latin Grammy winner Miguelito. The 15 year old has kept his head on straight no matter the success he's found at such a young age. While most kids are playing video games or getting messy playing in dirt outdoors, Miguelito started his music career at the age of six, releasing Mas Grande Que Tu. That album was a hit, and his follow-up El Heredero earned him a Latin Grammy for Best Childrens' Album. He's been praised by Billboard, and just about everywhere else, and urban legend Daddy Yankee took him under his wing shortly thereafter. Not too bad considering when I was seven, my biggest accomplishment was getting lost on the beach at Wildwood, NJ. Anyway, Miguelito is back with a cover of The Archies classic "Sugar Sugar," and it's as catchy now as it was back then. His "Suga Suga" is a summer gem, and features Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman. At Primary Wave Music's Listening Room in New York City, I spoke with the young talent for A-Sides about his fast rise in the industry and working with Stockman and Daddy Yankee. Enjoy!

"Suga Suga" (which is an energetic remake of The Archies 1969 timeless classic "Sugar Sugar") made its highly anticipated worldwide debut exclusively via Sirius XM Satellite Radio. "I chose "Suga Suga" as my new single because my family and I would sing along to the original song when I was growing up. Shawn Stockman from Boyz II Men and I have created this new upbeat version. I am super excited to be collaborating with him on this song," commented Miguelito. Miguelito's colorful version is sure to have everyone dancing to the contagious beat of the song, and it won't be long until the catchy lyrics become the new teen pop anthem.

It's been a pretty good year for Chicago's Ace Reporter, and that's probably an understatement. The band's Yearling XL was released to much love, and today the band's allowing me to premiere the lyric video for its hit single "Untouched and Arrived" courtesy of Northern

Transmissions. Have a watch and listen, and get on this band now. They're going to make you famous in your social circles one day.

A-Sides "Delve Into Twelve" Countdown

Each week A-Sides unleashes its Top 12 tracks of the week AKA the "Delve Into Twelve"based on the following contributing factors: songs I'm playing out that particular week NO MATTER WHEN THEY WERE RELEASED (think overlooked songs, unreleased tracks, and old favorites), songs various publicists are trying to get me to listen to that I did and dug a bunch, posts and trends I've noticed on my friends' Facebook walls, and - most importantly - the songs my two-year-old son gravitates toward by stomping his feet in approval. Yeah, you read that right. This weeks follows below (LW= last week's rank).

12. "Hunger of the Pine" (debut) - Alt-J

11. "Overdose" (debut) - Little Daylight

10. "Boom Clap" (debut) - Charli XCX

9."Get Hurt" (LW-11) - Gaslight Anthem

About A-Sides Music

Jon Chattman's "A-Sides Music" series was established in August 2011 and usually features artists (established or not) from all genres performing a track, and discussing what it means to them. This informal series focuses on the artist making art in a low-threatening, extremely informal (sometimes humorous) way. No bells, no whistles -- just the music performed in a random, low-key setting followed by an unrehearsed chat. In an industry where everything often gets overblown and over manufactured, I'm hoping this is refreshing. Artists have included: fun, Courtney Love, Air Supply, Birdy, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Pharrell Williams, American Authors, Imagine Dragons, Gary Clark Jr., and more! A-Sides theme written and performed by Blondfire.

Miley Cyrus twerks upside down in edgy new Terry Richardson photoshoot

With her edgy hair cut, racy music video and increasingly flesh-flashing stage outfits, Miley Cyrus has been clearly keen to put her Disney Hannah Montana alter ego well and truly behind her.
And her new Terry Richardson photoshoot will put paid to any lingering doubts that Miley is intent on pushing a few more boundaries.
One photo shows the 20-year-old smoking a cigarette, blowing smoke out of her scarlet pout, while another features the star grabbing her crotch.

Miley was predictably pleased with the results of her collaboration with the celebrity photographer, tweeting: 'Terry Motha F***** Richardson' alongside a snapshot of the two of them posing together.
The star also took the opportunity to show off her svelte figure, sporting a crop top and short black hot pants and showing off her multitude of tattoos while 'flipping the bird' at the camera.
She sported oversized black glasses and poked her tongue out of her mouth while confidently posing against a simple white backdrop.

The star's provocative image appears to be paying off - her song We Can't Stop hit the number two spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and gave Miley her first UK number one single.
'I'm selling records and that's all I'm here to do,' the star said back in June.

'I don't care if people don't like my haircut or think I dress too this way or my video's too provocative.
'If I knew what people were saying, I'd probably hate myself. I don't look at that kind of stuff.'

The star's video for We Can't Stop contains sexual references, provocative poses and a buttock shaking dance move known as 'twerking.'
'You know, I built an entire empire for myself by the time that I was 11, but now I'm just the twerk queen,' she laughed.
She also told Billboard she identified with the party-themed lifestyle of We Can't Stop.
'I didn't make this song for the critics, but for the people living it,' she said. 'I'm 20 years old and I want to talk to the people that are up all night with their friends.
'It's based on a true story of a crazy night I had: When I heard the song for the first time, it captured exactly what I was living.'
With a hit single behind her, Miley also has high expectations ambitious for her new album, entitled Bangerz
'I want my record to be the biggest record in the world, and I've given everything to get here, even down to friends and family and relationships - I've just put this music first,' she said.
'That's been kind of a trip: It's not like I'm losing who I am  - I actually found out more about who I am by making this music.
'I'm going on a journey, and that's more than a lot of 20-year-olds can say. And I'm still going to change so much. Because I'm not the same person I was six months ago-I'm not even the same person I was two weeks ago.'
Pearly whites: Miley has undergone a drastic change of image in the past year, cutting her hair and striking plenty of provocative poses

The star recently revealed that collaborators on Bangerz include Big Sean, Ludacris, and Future, although the record has no release date as yet.
Miley will be joining the Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Kanye West to perform at the MTV Viudeo Music Awards in New York City on August 25.

Mariah Carey dazzles in two very sexy gowns at the World Music Awards

She's long been known as a diva.
And on Tuesday night, Mariah Carey proved that's still the case as she arrived four hours late to open the show at the 2014 World Music Awards, held at Monte Carlo's Le Sporting Club in Monaco.
The 44-year-old was all set to launch her new album, Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse, prior to the awards show, but when it was pushed back by several hours, the proceedings were thrown into chaos.
Worth the wait! Mariah Carey dazzled the audience at the 2014 World Music Awards at Monte Carlo's Le Sporting Club in Monaco on Tuesday night despite being four hours late after her album launch was delayed
Worth the wait! Mariah Carey dazzled the audience at the 2014 World Music Awards at Monte Carlo's Le Sporting Club in Monaco on Tuesday night despite being four hours late after her album launch was delayed
'Mariah was meant to be at the Sporting Club at 5.30pm but her album launch was put back to 9.30pm,' The Mirror reports a senior producer as explaining. 'The whole event has been delayed.
It's not great.'
However, it seems not everyone was aware of the cause of the delay, with a World Music Awards spokesman not mincing words as he said rather harshly: 'We don't know why Mariah is late, she's
just being Mariah.'
When she did finally arrive, the 44-year-old was in fine form as she took to the stage to belt out
a tune.
The star looked sensational in a long-sleeved floor-length sparkly black gown that featured sexy sheer panels all over - her modesty only protected by skimpy black underwear - and a plunging neckline that exposed plenty of cleavage.
'The whole event has been delayed. It's not great': While the show's producers scrambled to rearrange the schedule after learning that their opening act was running late, they were rewarded when she eventually took to the stage for a pitch-perfect performance

She was wearing her now-signature black fingerless glove on her right arm, while she accessorised with a glitzy diamond bracelet in the shape of a snake, dangly earrings and a butterfly ring.
Her long golden tresses were worn in soft waves and her face was beautifully made up in complementary golden tones, with dark, smoky eyes and nude glossy lips.
As well as performing during the star-studded ceremony - which also saw the likes of Miley Cyrus, Leona Lewis, Ricky Martin and Jason Derulo in attendance - the original diva was also the lucky recipient of two awards.
She was awarded the Pop Icon and Best-Selling Solo Artist Of All-Time gongs and took to the podium to make a gushing speech dressed in her second outfit of the evening.
Confetti shower! Large round gold confetti fell down from the ceiling as her performance concluded, with one piece getting rather unfortunately lodged between her breasts in her plunging gown

The number featured silver diamantés in all the right places to protect her modesty, with a sheer long-sleeved underlay that fell to the floor, which was also scattered with the sparkling jewels.
Posting several photos with her awards backstage in her dressing room as she was joined by her three-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, the proud mom gushed that no award could measure
up to her precious babies.
'The best awards I've ever received: Roc & Roe!! Thank you Melissa & all at the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo #L4L,' she wrote to accompany the sweet black and white shot of her kids playing with the shiny statuettes.
In another show of her divaliciousness, Mariah even arrived with her own lighting guy to ensure she looked her absolute best at all times.
'She likes to have her lighting man wherever she goes to make sure the lighting is right. That's really important to her,' a source tells The Mirror.
Wardrobe change! Mariah switched into an equally revealing sheer gown that was covered in a smattering of silver diamantés in all the right places as she returned to the stage to accept two awards during proceedings

'Stop using our music during your campaign'- Rolling Stones issues warning to Donald Trump

Legendary British band, the Rolling Stones have issued a statement to US presidential candidate Donald Trump saying that he does not have permission to use the band's music during any of his campaigns or rallies.

Donald Trump has been playing their songs at his rallies for months with their 1969 hit 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' being a particular favourite.

“The Rolling Stones have never given permission to the Trump campaign to use their songs and have requested that they cease all use immediately,” a spokesperson for the legendary British band told TIME Wednesday.
Trump has been known to play at least two other songs by the Rolling Stones at his rallies: “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Brown Sugar.” A campaign volunteer told the New Yorker in February that Trump personally curated the playlist, which also includes Elton John and music from “Cats” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”

It's not the first time a popular musician has distanced himself or herself from Donald Trump. In February, Adele released a statement distancing herself from the Billionaire businessman.

The singer issued a statement making it clear she had "not given permission for her music to be used for any political campaigning," .

Neil Young, Tyler and Aerosmith have also warned Trump to stop using their music.

Trump is now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, after his last Republican rival John Kasich quit the race on Wednesday.

Giorgio Moroder Is Back, Thanks To Daft Punk

If two French robots hadn't coaxed him out of semi-retirement, Giorgio Moroder would still be practicing his swing somewhere on a Los Angeles golf course. Instead, the 74-year-old Italian composer and record producer, credited with pioneering electronic dance music and crafting space disco hits like Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff," is back on the scene as a DJ.

A few hours before his hugely anticipated headlining appearance at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago on July 18, the Oscar and Grammy winner told The Huffington Post that it's the audience who inspires his energy.

"I just did a gig in France two days ago and it was incredible: 25,000 people doing whatever I wanted to do," Moroder said. "It's an experience. There are not too many people who can have that experience. Maybe the top 20 of the DJs -- and I'm by far not the top 20 -- but the feeling is incredible."

Despite the fact that he composed and produced some of the most popular songs of the past 40 years -- including Donna Summer's "Carry On," Blondie's "Call Me," Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone" and Irene Cara's "Flashdance... What a Feeling" -- Moroder is genuinely surprised that younger fans recognize his older work.

"Amazingly, the young kids -- 20, 30 -- they know some of the songs. Some even know some of the lyrics. I don't know how, I guess it's the Internet," Moroder said. "It's quite amazing that people recognize the songs."

In the '70s and '80s, Moroder was well known behind the scenes as a producer and composer to artists like Summer, Mick Jagger and Jimmy Page, who came through his Musicland Studios in Munich.

Thanks to the track "Giorgio by Moroder" on Daft Punk's 2013 album, "Random Access Memories," in which Morodor speaks about his life over a swank instrumental, fans nowadays recognize Moroder's voice as much as they do his famously mustachioed face: Moroder said just moments earlier, en route to the Pitchfork festival site, that his driver hadn't seen his face. But when he spoke, the driver immediately asked him, "Are you Giorgio Moroder?"

"Random Access Memories" not only relaunched Moroder's career -- it catapulted Pharrell Williams to a whole new level of stardom and resuscitated the career of producer and musician Nile Rodgers, a veteran of the 1970s disco outfit Chic.

"If the Daft Punk [record] would not have come out, and without DJing, I probably would not do music. First of all, to start a new career, that's not easy," Moroder said. "That album was good for several people, me included."

Moroder was a fan of Daft Punk's 2001 song, "One More Time," but said he hadn't listened to much new music over the past decade. Now, he favors acts like David Guetta, Avicii and other radio-friendly artists -- "like what they play on KISS-FM."

"I love the EDM kind of music, the uptempo songs. The sounds are beautiful," he said, adding, "I just don't know how long it's going to last. It starts to become a little bit repetitive. But other than that, I love it."

Since he became a DJ himself a little more than a year ago, Moroder has fully embraced the digital revolution.

"I love analogue, but digital has so many good sounds and they're getting better and better," he said.

Pitchfork fest fans would tend to agree: Moroder's set went on to be the highlight of the event's opening day, no doubt earning him a few more fans who will snap up his new record, currently in the works.

"I'm preparing an album with all different kinds of artists," Moroder said. "Nothing is ready, but a lot of ideas. It's going to be a nice album."

Which song is featured in the Apple Watch Style ad featuring Chloe Sevigny?

Apple have released a new style ad for the Apple watch, starring actress Chloe Sevingy. Now, the ad itself speaks volumes for the way in which the watch can be switched in and out of bands to accommodate one's personal style. Yes, it's a great ad. But, as always with Apple ads, the world seems to be as obsessed with the music used in the ad as much as the product itself. In the past week I have received dozens of emails from readers asking me if I knew what music was used in the Apple watch style ad featuring Chloe Sevigny. Well, ladies and gents, seeing as you think I'm a music, tech and fashion expert all rolled into one, I couldn't help but deliver. The music featured in the Apple watch style ad is from none other than Kiiara, who, according to Jezebel, is a 20 year old who has a day job in a hardware store in Illinois. How's that for a start to your music career? Apple choosing to feature your debut single in an ad that is spread far and wide. Welcome to stardom, Kiiari. You are solid "Gold" - (incidentally, the name of the debut track used in the Apple Watch ad).

Here's the ad, recapped for you:

And here's the full version for you:

Wawela Music Awards

LCentre to attend the first ever Wawela Music Awards courtesy of Southern African Music Rights Organization (SAMRO). I did not know what to expect considering the ‘drama’ that previously surrounded SAMRO.
ast Friday we headed to Sandton Convention
Wawela is a Zulu word meaning ‘to go beyond’. These awards are mainly to honour the talented individuals behind the music (the composers) in different platforms including Film, Radio and Television. Which I think is a great idea because we hardly pay attention to the songwriters/composers, who when you look at it, I think they are the most important.
When we arrived, the venue was already getting packed. I don’t like complaining so I am going to look past all the technical faults and time wasting that took place there because it was their first time hosting these awards, we hope next year all will be on point. It was a nice dinner gala set up, I loved it. However I was not impressed with the fact that before we went inside we were told that we can sit anywhere. Well, we followed instructions and just sat at a table that we chose and the next minute we were told ‘Sorry, you have to move because this table is reserved’. Why wasn’t there a Reserved sign on the table beats me.
Anyway, we got up and started looking for another table. So annoying because it’s really not cool to be walking around looking lost, all eyes come on to you. Thank goodness actress Thandy Matlaila who I think was part of the event organizers, came to our rescue and gave us a table.
Funny enough the table that she told us to occupy, had a huge reserved sign on it, and guess what? the high school naughty kid in me stepped out and took off the sign and threw it under the table. Haai shem there was no way I was going to be ordered to move again. Hehehehehehe. Here are the pictures that our photographer Picay managed to get for us.

Our Hosts for the evening, Azania Mosaka and Gareth Cliff. They did very well, funny but very classy. They knew what type of crowd they were dealing with.
Nick Motsatse, Chief Executive Officer of SAMRO. That day was his last as CEO of SAMRO. He has moved on to other avenues. He is posing here with his wife.
I met the legendary Sizwe Zako for the first time. He is such a humble man la tata. No wonder he is successful.
Another legend that was present and also got to perform for us is Johnny Glegg.
When Lebo M went up to collect his award, he name dropped shem. Yhuuuuuuuuuu!!! The emphasis on ‘My Grammy Award’ to working with ‘Quincy Jones’ hehehehehe.
Actor Luthuli Dlamini also came through looking hot as usual.
Still on the Dlamini’s, I saw singer LeAnne Dlamini as well.
Eish, I’m sorry but I don’t know who this lady is guys. Is it Khanyo Maphumulo? They look alike. If it’s not her then haaai I don’t know.
I was impressed by Daniel Baron’s performance. It kinda reminded me of Westlife.
Solomon Subz Sebothoma and Thandy Matlaila were both there to work. They were all over the place making sure all goes well.
Guys, I am still shocked by Guffy hey. This guy is practically saying NO to aging yazi? He looks very young and fresh. Wow!!!
Reverend Abe Sibiya, he is the Chairman of the SAMRO Board Of Directors.
Mam’ Dorothy Masuka’s acceptance speech for her Lifetime Achievement Award was full of words of wisdom. She gave advise to SA singers and said ‘God gave you the talent to sing. Use it wisely. Stop drinking and smoking that talent away’
Nominee, singer Nothende with her friend and fellow musician Ahmed Sirour. They are working together on tracks for Nothende’s next album.
I still need to know where Black Porcelain has been hiding all along. I never heard of her before these awards. This lady can sing.
Miss Lira’s acceptance speech was just too honest. She said 10years ago when things were tough for her, she survived through SAMRO money. She just couldn’t hide how thankful she was.
When it comes to music events like these then you know Lindelani Mkhize and Zwai Bala will be there.
Best performance of the night for me was by Phuzekhemisi. He delivered ubaba stru. With so much passion even. Look at that kick. Doctor Malinga who?? Lol
The Soil also performed well. Pure, fresh voices.
Mafikizolo did what they do best on stage.
Theo Kgosinkwe’s dance moves, that guy can move. Nhlanhla Nciza’s pants seem to be the IN thing at the moment. Toya DeLazy even rocked them at the BET Awards.
They also joined Mam’ Dorothy. It was amazing to watch.
There was an emotional and teary moment when they played a composition/video of uTata Nelson Mandela showing us his journey and all the work he has done throughout his life. The entire house went silent. I was even shocked by Gareth Cliff who couldn’t speak after watching it because it was that deep. When you look at people like Gareth you wouldn’t think they have feelings. Aza seemed stronger than him after that.
Gareth announced an After Party but I couldn’t attend it. I was too tired. I know some of you will say ‘Kiki you should have attended because we want umgosi’, but trust me when I tell you that there was no chance of umgosi there because of the crowd. What mgosi can one get from legends like Johnny Glegg and Mam’ Dorothy? Lutho shem. Lol!!
A big Thank you to Nosipho Ginindza and the Soul Providers team for inviting us. We had a great time. To the SAMRO family, we appreciate your initiative guys, keep it up.
Just some advise for the next awards. Please give us more entertainment. Those long breaks and silence during the serving of Dinner were not on. That is what kinda spoiled the night a little. Give us a comedian nje to keep us company. Otherwise you guys did very well for first timers. The Nominees were announced on the 21st May 2013 but unfortunately we couldn’t attend.
Here is the list of all the winners.
