The "To-Do" list guide to Monte Carlo, Monaco

My first exposure to Monte Carlo came at the tender age of eleven, technically speaking. I was home in bed with a high fever (probably strep throat or some kind of crazy bug you get when you are young and catching everything under the sun). It was the weekend and I was feeling miserable. I crawled into bed in the afternoon, in my parents room, and my dad came to lay next to me and switched on the TV. Just the weekend before we had watched my first "old movie." It was Paper Moon, starring Tatum O'Neal. Obviously my dad had remembered how much better I felt, snuggled up and enjoying cinema classics. So, he switched on the TV and I was mesmerized as I watched Cary Grant and Grace Kelly speed through the roads of Monte Carlo. I was a smitten kitten. At that moment, age eleven and with a temperature of 101, I made a promise to the universe that I would one day go there and feel every bit the superstar that Grace Kelly looked in the film.

So, finally at the ripe old age of 36, I made good on that promise to myself and the universe. I may not have had Cary Grant by my side, nor was I driving a sports car with the top down (although this is in the works), but I did do quite a few things, that I think, Mr. Grant and Ms. Kelly would have greatly approved of during my stay. And while I was doing these things, I made a mental list of what exactly a tourist of the Principality of Monaco should do upon their arrival. Here's your top ten list of what to do with a weekend in Monte Carlo(with a few pics thrown after it all for good measure):

1. Travel into Monte Carlo by helicopter
Now I know what you're thinking - it's just as easy to drive or take a train from the Nice airport, so why would I take a helicopter? Well, my friends, first things first - it isn't anywhere near as expensive as you think it is. Ok, it isn't cheap either, but you are looking at around 150 euros for an experience that is well worth the investment. I mention this because I thought helicopter travel would be something I could never dream of doing, mainly because I had no idea of the cost. Well, now you do and you can make an educated decision. For seven minutes you are flown on what can only be described as the most luxurious arrival vehicle touching down in the Principality. You have the best view of the city and the easiest form of passport control I've yet to encounter.

2. Rent or borrow a car to drive the Grand Prix track
Now, I did not do this on this visit, but a plan of action is in the works. I actually felt wrong leaving Monte Carlo having not done this. I can't tell you the number of times I've had to watch the Grand Prix with my dad and brothers at home and now, being in the city and not driving the famous hairpin turns, it all seems so wrong. So find a friend with a Ferrari, or take you rented Honda and make the turns.

3. Coffee or an ice cream sundae at Cafe de Paris
Cafe de Paris is legendary, mainly because of the location of the cafe. It sits on the other side of the famous Hotel de Paris and runs perpendicular to the famous Monte Carlo Casino. In short, it offers a view of the action that you won't find anywhere else. Sit and sip your coffee as you watch supercar after supercar pull up to the hotel or casino and hand over their keys to the happiest valets this side of the UK. Ok, it's also pretty famous because their sweet treats are somewhat epic in nature. Basically, it doesn't matter about the price. You are paying for the show going on around you as much as you are the beverage or dessert in front of you.

4. Stroll the Avenue Princesse Grace
Once said to the most expensive street in the world, this is a place to view new and old architecture alike, as well as to stargaze and dream about who may be living inside apartments that cost as much as $17,750 a square foot. But, don't let your strolling end there. Monte Carlo is an easy town to visit by foot. There is plenty to see, both inland and on the shore - and new things popping up all the time.

5. Nobu at the Fairmont Monte Carlo
This just has to be done. Nobu is legendary, and for good reason. Not only is the food superb, but you're always going to see a familiar face sitting in the restaurant. This is Monte Carlo, and Nobu is one of the best restaurants in the world. You do the math. It's a dinner worth dressing up for.

6. Stay out until sunrise
You'll find that every nightclub, worth going to, in Monte Carlo, has a policy of opening late and closing at sunrise. Yup - that's the only official closing time - when the sun comes up. Seems the night is meant for Monte Carlo fun and the city wants to deliver an experience you won't forget. From Jimmy'z to Sass Cafe, this scene has something for everything. You just need enough nights to find your perfect match!

7. Get historical with the Prince's Palace of Monaco
You can't go to Monaco and not at least try to stop by and say hello to Prince Albert and Princess Charlene, right? It would just be plain rude. So, make your way up to the Prince's Palace and pay your respects. There are some great places for selfies and a killer view of the city.

8. Shop til you drop!
If you come to Monte Carlo with more money than you know what to do with, you're going to want to go shopping, right? Well, don't expect to run into a Gap or a Zara after your coffee at Cafe de Paris. You are surrounded by top end retailers in the Carre d'Or. Everyone from Chanel to Yves Saint Laurent has a shop here and they are all too happy to help you spend your hard earned cash. It should be noted that even if you aren't in line to buy a Chanel bag, the window shopping in this part of the world is second to none. Get out there and give the designers a whirl.

9. The Exotic gardens and observation cave
The world seems to be obsessed with succulents these days, right? Well, Monaco has one of the most impressive collections of succulents in the Exotic Gardens with an impressive view of the city at its feet. You need a little culture while in town, right?

10. Grab the tour bus
I have always said that the best way to start a tour of any city is with a quick ride around on the local tour bus. Even if you just take this to get a lay of the land, it's totally worth it. Monaco has a The Monaco Grand Tour. Jump on in your first morning in Monte Carlo and make notes of all the places that are of interest - to each their own and my list might just not be your cup of tea. Then take that list and plan a course of attack for however long you're in town. Easy peasy!

Donald Trump caught peeking at photo of his bikini clad ex-wife Marla Maples

Donald Trump was caught taking a peek at a photo of his ex-wife, Marla Maples, wearing a blue bikini at a 1985 Hawaii beauty pageant, in a photo he shared on Twitter. The picture showed him eating a taco bowl and celebrating how he 'loves Hispanics'. Although the picture was slightly covered, sharp eyed people were able to spot it.

The Republican presumptive nominee sent out a tweet that said:
'Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!' Beneath the bowl and under some newspapers was a photo of his bikini-clad ex-wife, Marla Ann Maples, who is an actress and tv personality, best known for her six-year marriage to Donald, which ended in a divorce in 1999.

Read Buhari's remark at the signing of the 2016 budget into law

Buhari signed the 2016 budget into law today. Read his remark during the signing below
1. It gives me great pleasure today to sign the first full-year budget of this administration into law. I thank the leadership of the National Assembly, in particular, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and indeed all members of the National Assembly for their cooperation in making this a reality.
 2. The budget is intended to signpost a renewal of our commitment to restoring the budget as a serious article of faith with the Nigerian people. This Administration is committed to ensuring that henceforth the annual appropriation bill is presented to the National Assembly in time for the passage of the Act before the beginning of the fiscal year.

3. Through the 2016 budget, aptly titled "Budget of Change’’, the government seeks to fulfill its own side of the social contract. The Budget I have signed into law provides for aggregate expenditures of N6.06trn. Further details of the approved budget, as well as our Strategic Implementation Plan for the 2016 budget, will be provided by the Honourable Minister of Budget and National Planning.

4. I shall be speaking in more details about the Budget, its implementation and the over-all national economic and social policies of the Government in my address on May 29th, God willing.

5. In designing the 2016 budget, we made a deliberate choice to pursue an expansionary fiscal policy despite the huge decline in government revenues from crude oil exports. This is why we decided to enlarge the budget deficit at this time, to be financed principally through foreign and domestic borrowings. All borrowings will however be applied towards growth-enhancing capital expenditures.

6. The signing of the budget today will trigger concerted efforts to reflate the Nigerian economy, a key element of which is an immediate injection of N350bn into the economy by way of capital projects. To illustrate our renewed commitment to infrastructural development, the 2016 budget allocates over N200bn to road construction as against a paltry N18bn allocated for same purpose in the 2015 budget.

7. Despite the current difficulties we will work extra-hard to achieve our revenue projections. Our revenue generating agencies are coming under better management and are being re-oriented. The implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) is expected to contribute significantly to improving transparency over government revenues.

8. Our determined fight against corruption is resulting in improvements in the quality of public expenditure. The work of the Efficiency Unit, as well as other public financial management initiatives, are also contributing in this regard. The continuing efforts to reduce recurrent expenditures should hopefully free up more funds for capital expenditure in 2017 and beyond.

9. As I said in my New Year message, living in State House does not in any way alienate me from your daily struggles. I read the newspapers and listen to the TV and radio news. I hear your cries. I share your pains.

10. We are experiencing probably the toughest economic times in the history of our Nation. I want to commend the sacrifice, resilience and toughness of all Nigerians young and old who have despite the hardships continued to have hope and confidence of a great future for Nigerians. But permit me to say that this government is also like none other. We are absolutely committed to changing the structure of the Nigerian economy once and for all.

11.We are working night and day to diversify the economy so that we never again have to rely on one commodity to survive as a country. So that we can produce the food we eat, make our own textiles, produce most of the things we use. We intend to create the environment for our young peoples to be able to innovate and create jobs through technology.

12. I cannot promise you that this will be an easy journey, but in the interest of so much and so many we must tread this difficult path. I can assure you that this government you have freely elected will work with honesty and dedication, day and night to ensure that our country prospers and that the prosperity benefits all Nigerians. God bless Federal Republic of Nigeria

Story & photos of Kristin Douglas’ visit to Nigeria

Remember Kristin Douglas? She was the nurse whose photo (taken with Beyonce at a funeral) literarily broke the internet in March, after it was posted on Instagram by her sister, Kelsi Leggett, without Kristin’s knowledge. Well, Kristin Douglas was in Nigeria a few days back for what she had thought would be a quiet, ‘private visit’, but which turned otherwise.

According to sources, the nurse and mother of two wanted to visit Africa as part of her fact-finding efforts to help raise awareness for the plight of the needy, across the world. Though Kristin Douglas had initially planned to visit either Kenya or South Africa, some of her old friends and new-found acquaintances on the internet, who are Nigerians, not only prevailed on her to visit Nigeria first but also actively supported her tour and ended up turning it into a ‘not-so-private visit’ after all.

Places she visited during her tour  included Modupe Cole Memorial Child Care and Treatment Home, Akoka, Yaba and Hearts of Gold Hospice, Surulere, both in Lagos. It was said that Kristin Douglas donated food items and personal care products to the physically and mentally challenged in both places. She also visited the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Games Village, Abuja where with the help of Dr. (Mrs.) Shade Samuel of Helping Hands Foundation, she got first-hand information about the plight of IDPs and made donations which were appreciated by inhabitants of the camp.

Not yet done, Kristin Douglas went to Keffi, Nassarawa State, arriving at night at the premises of Dr. Simon Agwale’s Innovative Biotech Limted, which has a multipurpose vaccine plant, where nanosilver mineral solution which boosts immunity is also produced. It is on record that Dr. Agwale has been in the forefront of research for the cure of HIV and Ebola in Africa and the world.
Kristin’s visit to Nigeria was not without some fun and social activities, though. In Lagos, she was hosted by friends, at Club Quilox in Victoria Island. In Abuja, she worshiped at Apostle Yemi Adefarasin’s Kingdom Lifeline Apostolic Ministries (KLAM) and was treated to a dinner by the management of Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

According to a source close to Inventrica Multimedia, the African division of Inventrica LLC, USA which works with Kristin Douglas, “Kristin is all out not only to reach out to the needy, but also to tell the world to support the deprived, the displaced and the diseased (the three Ds)   -people, who are disadvantaged by circumstances of birth or physical, mental, natural, geographic challenges or acts of terrorism. This much she expressed during an interview on Cool FM radio in Lagos.”

Uche Jombo's brother unveils "Good Home”; As he echoes societal derailment

With the present situation of the country, and choking societal ills that have victimized almost everyone directly or indirectly, more film makers seem to have woken up to the need for a criticism of some of the dark acts of humans and how some people have disrupted the vision of this country through their uncontrollable selfish preoccupation.

Having worked as a co-producer with his talented and award winning sister, Uche Jombo, who tutored him to be one of the Lilium Inter Spinas of the industry that she is, Nelson Jombo released his first movie “Luke of Lies” in 2015, which also touched on some of the vices that pervades the society. Directed by Emmanuel Mang Eme, Luke of Lies stars Alexx Ekubo, Eddie Watson, Belinda Effah, Daniella Okeke, Laurel JE, Nkechinyere Urom Jombo and others, who captured the prevailing issue of internet scam amidst other domestic vices perfectly.

Not losing the vibes of addressing the issues that affects the masses, as against the overflogged romance that has been the crux of Nollywood for a long time, Nelson Jombo, moved on to produce “Espionage”, which has its plot revolving around the issues of cyber crime, money laundering and murder, which has, overtime, been the way of life of teenagers and young adults in Nigeria, and by extension the world at large. Nelson perfectly experimented with the undercover agent character, an aspect most Nigerians film makers shy away from, due to its complexities, but complexity is what Nelson is made for. Speaking on the movie, the director, Uzee Madubugwu affirmed that the team paid attention to the minutest of details, as they aimed for excellence.

Fast forward to 2016, Nelson has once again proven that he is in for some serious business, as he unveils “Good Home”, another strong allusion to one of the vices of the society that most people have decided not to talk about-Human Trafficking-especially as he drives his message from the point of the role of the supposed entrepreneurs in this societal ill.

The plot of “Good Home” focuses on the CEO of a trucking company, who is acquitted during a high profile human trafficking case, but when he wants to go legitimate, his dodgy business partner does everything in his power to keep their arrangement going.

The movie which was directed by Edward Uka and produced by Nelson Jombo under the Nelson Jombo Production stars the likes of Seun Akindele, Okey Uzoeshi, Vincent Opurum, Maureen Okpoko, Eric Obinna, Nkechinyere Urum Jombo, Ejike Ibedilo and Laurel JE. "Good Home" would be showing exclusively on Iroko TV, Irokoworld, Channel 23, and Channel 211 on Star Times.
