Arise Dame Angelina: After four days of hobnobbing at war summit, starstruck William Hague hands Tinseltown's queen Jolie a gong

Angelina Jolie has been made a dame by William Hague.
The starstruck Foreign Secretary, who has spent most of the week at the Hollywood actress’s side, bestowed the surprise accolade on her as part of the Queen’s birthday honours.
The pair have been working closely together at a summit on rape in London – despite the escalating political and military crises in Iraq, Syria and Ukraine.

Miss Jolie, the 39-year-old star of Tomb Raider, said: ‘It means a great deal to me.’
But eyebrows were raised at the headline-grabbing damehood, which seals two years of growing friendship between the A-list actress and Mr Hague.
As an American citizen, it is highly unusual that Miss Jolie has received an honour from Britain.
Foreigners are occasionally awarded them – there was an honorary knighthood for Bob Geldof, who is Irish, after Live Aid.
Labour MP Paul Flynn said that giving a top award to a celebrity with friends in high places rather than an unsung British hero undermined the credibility of the honours system.
‘The honours system is becoming increasingly discredited and this is another step in that direction,’ he said.
‘Angelina Jolie is doing creditable work but it is ridiculous to honour people who are already over-endowed with privileges and wealth.’
Critics also said damehoods are usually bestowed later in life, after a recipient has earned a lower honour such as an OBE or a CBE.

The honour to Miss Jolie, a UN Special Envoy, recognises her ‘extraordinary’ work to stamp out rape as a weapon in war zones, culminating in a landmark international summit in London to tackle the menace.
Mr Hague said she thoroughly deserved the award because she had ‘made a real difference and achieved lasting results’, referring to the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative the pair launched in 2012.
Miss Jolie said: ‘To receive an honour related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to.’
She becomes an honorary Dame Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George.
It is awarded to those who ‘render extraordinary or important non-military service in a foreign country’.
It can also be conferred for important or loyal service in relation to foreign and Commonwealth affairs.
Mr Hague and Miss Jolie have made a number of visits to war zones around the world together.

The Foreign Secretary has seemed bewitched by the actress all week, with he and David Cameron looking like awestruck schoolboys when they welcomed her to Britain on Tuesday.
Mr Hague gushed that she was ‘a pleasure to work with’, and said her ‘power to speak to the whole world’ and his ‘levers of decision-making and action’ were a formidable combination.
Whitehall officials confirmed Miss Jolie’s damehood was an honour ‘from the Foreign Office ... for services to UK foreign policy and the campaign to end war zone sexual violence’.
The Foreign Office refused to confirm it was Mr Hague who had nominated Miss Jolie.

Yesterday Mr Hague was all smiles as he appeared at the closing session of the summit with Miss Jolie, who wore a grey kimono-style dress.
Her partner Brad Pitt and Mr Hague’s wife Ffion, who usually shuns publicity, were also present.
Later he said he and US Secretary of State John Kerry, who also attended the summit, had ‘obviously’ discussed the deepening conflict in Iraq.
Downing Street defended Mr Hague’s decision to devote a week to accompanying Miss Jolie.
Mr Cameron believed it was the ‘right thing to do’ to carry on with the ‘very important initiative’, said a spokesman, who insisted Mr Hague had not taken his eye off the ball on Iraq.

Bars and Melody win last automatic place in Britain's Got Talent final

They've already developed international appeal having made an appearance on US talk show Ellen, and young rap duo Bars and Melody capped an incredible two weeks on Thursday evening by winning the last automatic semi-final spot on Britain's Got Talent.
The two pals could barely contain themselves after hearing the news, which ensures they talke their place in next Saturday's grand final.
With one final place up for grabs judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden were charged with the task of choosing between the Innova Irish Dance Company and plummy violinist Lettice Rowbotham.

‘I love you both equally so to even things out I’m going for Innova to even it out,’ said Alesha after David opted for Lettice.
With Amanda also voting for Innova the casting vote was left to Simon, who conceded that Lettice’s performance wasn’t her best.
‘But you’re really fantastic and I think with the right production you’d do great,’ he added, before giving her his vote - meaning it was once again left to the public vote, which fell in her favour.

As the last semi-final kicked off on Thursday night Alesha conceded they were shaping up for a 'really strong final' - but, for once, her chosen ensemble left a lot to be desired.
The TV personality matched a breezy polka dot blouse with a striking mini-skirt and heels as she took to the stage at London's Fountain Studios with fellow judges Amanda Holden, David Walliams and Britain's Got Talent supremo Simon Cowell.
Wednesday's show saw classical singer Lucy Kay win automatic qualification for the grand final, and the Innova Irish Dance Company hoped to emulate that success after being handed the task of opening the show.

Mariah Carey dazzles in two very sexy gowns at the World Music Awards

She's long been known as a diva.
And on Tuesday night, Mariah Carey proved that's still the case as she arrived four hours late to open the show at the 2014 World Music Awards, held at Monte Carlo's Le Sporting Club in Monaco.
The 44-year-old was all set to launch her new album, Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse, prior to the awards show, but when it was pushed back by several hours, the proceedings were thrown into chaos.

Worth the wait! Mariah Carey dazzled the audience at the 2014 World Music Awards at Monte Carlo's Le Sporting Club in Monaco on Tuesday night despite being four hours late after her album launch was delayed
'Mariah was meant to be at the Sporting Club at 5.30pm but her album launch was put back to 9.30pm,' The Mirror reports a senior producer as explaining. 'The whole event has been delayed.
It's not great.'
However, it seems not everyone was aware of the cause of the delay, with a World Music Awards spokesman not mincing words as he said rather harshly: 'We don't know why Mariah is late, she's
just being Mariah.'
When she did finally arrive, the 44-year-old was in fine form as she took to the stage to belt out
a tune.
The star looked sensational in a long-sleeved floor-length sparkly black gown that featured sexy sheer panels all over - her modesty only protected by skimpy black underwear - and a plunging neckline that exposed plenty of cleavage.
'The whole event has been delayed. It's not great': While the show's producers scrambled to rearrange the schedule after learning that their opening act was running late, they were rewarded when she eventually took to the stage for a pitch-perfect performance

Picture-perfect: The 44-year-old looked absolutely stunning with her face full of heavy, perfectly-applied make-up featuring a golden base, dark, smoky eyes and glossy nude lips, framed by her blonde tresses, which were styled in soft waves, and huge dangly diamond earrings

She was wearing her now-signature black fingerless glove on her right arm, while she accessorised with a glitzy diamond bracelet in the shape of a snake, dangly earrings and a butterfly ring.
Her long golden tresses were worn in soft waves and her face was beautifully made up in complementary golden tones, with dark, smoky eyes and nude glossy lips.
As well as performing during the star-studded ceremony - which also saw the likes of Miley Cyrus, Leona Lewis, Ricky Martin and Jason Derulo in attendance - the original diva was also the lucky recipient of two awards.
She was awarded the Pop Icon and Best-Selling Solo Artist Of All-Time gongs and took to the podium to make a gushing speech dressed in her second outfit of the evening.
Confetti shower! Large round gold confetti fell down from the ceiling as her performance concluded, with one piece getting rather unfortunately lodged between her breasts in her plunging gown

The number featured silver diamantés in all the right places to protect her modesty, with a sheer long-sleeved underlay that fell to the floor, which was also scattered with the sparkling jewels.
Posting several photos with her awards backstage in her dressing room as she was joined by her three-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, the proud mom gushed that no award could measure
up to her precious babies.
'The best awards I've ever received: Roc & Roe!! Thank you Melissa & all at the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo #L4L,' she wrote to accompany the sweet black and white shot of her kids playing with the shiny statuettes.
In another show of her divaliciousness, Mariah even arrived with her own lighting guy to ensure she looked her absolute best at all times.
'She likes to have her lighting man wherever she goes to make sure the lighting is right. That's really important to her,' a source tells The Mirror.
Wardrobe change! Mariah switched into an equally revealing sheer gown that was covered in a smattering of silver diamantés in all the right places as she returned to the stage to accept two awards during proceedings

Their characters are often embroiled in dramatic storylines which controversial scenes.
But Jennifer Metcalfe, Jorgie Porter and Jacqueline Jossa were clearly ready for some good, clean fun at the British Soap Awards on Saturday.
The women led the way in show-stopping, floor-length dresses which wowed fans at the Hackney Empire in East London.

Flaunting a cut-out back and crop-top effect, her hair was worn in a cascade of waves while she matched her look with a flash of red lipstick.
She also sported another must-have accessory: a tan.

Meanwhile, Jacqueline Jossa - known for playing Laura Branning in Eastenders - went for a very different look.
She kept her hair smooth and sleek while wearing a contrast dress featuring a sheer panel with peacock-effect feathers. The choice was a daring one for the London-born 21 year-old, who showcased plenty of skin without looking brash.
Meanwhile, Jorgie Porter cut a stylish figure in a stunning silk gown which - literally - turned heads.

They weren't the only glamorous faces to appear on the red carpet, however. Marvin and Rochelle Humes were sartorially in sync with their jet-black evening wear, which was both flattering and fetching.
Tamara Wall and Anna Passey both stunned in similar red and blue silk dresses, while Jazmine Franks opted for a more Grecian affair. She capped it off with suitably-styled hair in a messy 'up' do.
However, not everybody looked quite so demure. Former Coronation Street and Heartbeat performer Nikki Sanderson seemed to over-do it in a pink ruffled dress.

Featuring a raised hemline at the front and a bodice top, it left little to the imagination and was reminiscent of something Katie Price would wear.
Naturally, she matched it with strappy heels for maximum effect.
Thankfully, Michelle Keegan did not disappoint. She wore a black and white suit and looked stunning on the arm of TOWIE star Mark Wright.

Somebody else who got it right on the fashion front was former This Life actress Luisa Bradshaw-White. She channeled the look of a classic fifties film star as she wore a metallic dress with capped shoulders and simple heels.
With subtle make-up and a demure hair style, she was one of the more immaculately dressed.
