Strictly Come Dancing beats The X Factor in Saturday night ratings battle... as 2013 launch becomes its most-watched EVER

  • Strictly attracted 300,000 more viewers at its peak than The X Factor
  • Average audience of 8.4m is highest ever, with 2012's Strictly launch drawing just 8m viewers
  • The X Factor managed to attract a further 500,000 viewers if ITV1+1 figures are taken into account
Strictly Come Dancing beat The X Factor in the Saturday night ratings battle this week, as the launch show became the most-watched series premiere of all time.
The BBC TV talent show attracted a significant 300,000 more viewers than The X Factor - with a peak audience of 9.4million compared to the ITV show's 9.1million.
Saturday night's launch show of Strictly saw the celebrity contestants paired up with their professional dance partners, as well as musical entertainment from stars including Rod Stewart and Jessie J.

And it seems the format was more than popular with viewers, as the launch was the most-watched of all time.
The episode had an average audience of 8.4million, compared to 8million in 2012, 7.6m in 2011 and 7.1m in 2010.
Meanwhile, despite being beaten by Strictly in both peak and average ratings figures, X Factor did manage to attract a peak audience of 9.5million if the ITV1+1 figures are included.

Saturday night's episode of The X Factor saw some familiar faces return for another bid at victory.
Jade Richards made it third time lucky on Saturday night when she stunned the X Factor judging panel with a moving rendition of Bruno Mars hit When I Was Your Man.
Having made it all the way to Kelly Rowland's Miami home during the judges house's stage of the competition in 2011, she was left bitterly disappointed when she wasn't selected for the live shows.

The Fife teenager admitted she'd been 'working in supermarkets' since her last appearance on the show in 2012, while her job description flashed up as 'unemployed' as she sang.
The 23-year-old was sent off with four yeses, but she wasn't the only familiar face on the show.
Amy Mottram also returned and was put through to the arena auditions after losing out on last year's wildcard to eventual finalist Christopher Maloney.

Dolly Rockers also returned with a version of Beyoncé hit End of Time and got four yeses for their troubles before Dubliner Melanie McCabe made an emotional return for her fourth attempt to make it through to the live shows.
Clearly affected by Melanie's return, Louis broke down as he assessed her performance.
'I know her family need this, I know you need this and I really want it for you. I really, really want you to do well,' he said.  'I'm saying as very big yes...Melanie this is your time - go for it.'
The X Factor returns to screens on Sunday night for the second round of arena auditions, while Strictly will be back later this month.

Belle of the Angel Ball: Rita Ora holds her own surrounded by a bevy of models in a striking gold gown at New York charity gala

Rita Ora may have found herself surrounded by a room full of models on Tuesday night, but the British songstress certainly held her own.

The 22-year-old looked a million bucks as she hit the red carpet at the Gabrielle's Angel Foundation 2013 Angel Ball, held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

The benefit, in aid of cancer research, saw the city's sexiest women - not to mention some equally gorgeous men: Hello, Hugh Jackman! - don their finest gowns for the occasion.

The Hot Right Now singer most definitely lived up to her song title in her elegant gold fishtail number, which gave the effect that it was dripping molten liquid and featured a draped gold beaded neckline.

Chunky platinum rings adorned almost every finger, while she a matching snakeskin clutch, earrings and bracelets completed the dazzling look.

Red talons picked up the colour of her glossy cheery lips and she played up her eyes with a healthy lashing of mascare and kohl liner.

She kept her cropped blonde looks in a contrasting yet complementary messy, wavy style.

Model Karolina Kurkova keep it simple yet chic in a black column gown with sexy cutouts that gave the slim beauty some shape.

The 29-year-old kept her blonde her loose and added little more than a slick of red lippie and two matching diamond cuffs on each wrist.
Jessica White also proved her style credentials in a daring sheer backless frock that protected her modesty only with well-placed white lace detailing.

Two can play that game: Chaka Khan, 60 (left), and Debra Messing, 45, proved they can mix with - and even outshine - the younger set as they donned their finest attire for the event, held at Cipriani Wall Street

Voluminous capped shoulders and a high neckline added a certain amount of class to the 29-year-old model's highly-detailed ensemble.
Adding some colour to the occasion was Selita Ebanks, who was picture-perfect in a deep turquoise long-sleeved slinky dress with embellished shoulder detail.

The stunning model, 30, slicked her hair back and played up her eyes with a shimmer of gold while keeping the rest of her look minimal, with little more than a pair of dangly earrings.

Actress Debra Messing, 45, proved she can also hang with a much younger and genetically-intimidating crowd as she slipped into a royal blue low-cut halterneck number.

The mom-of-one also chose to forgo lipstick in favour of emphasising her eyes, while she wore her signature long red locks in voluminous curls over one shoulder, enabling her to show off her striking blue earrings in the process.
Legendary Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Chaka Khan showed that she's still got it as she struck a pose in her figure-hugging black sequinned gown featuring a short train and three-quarter sleeves.
The 60-year-old, who took to the stage to perform during the evening's festivities, wore her dark locks in tight curls and added some contrast to her dark smokey eyes with a pop of red on her lips.

Providing entertainment for the evening was Pharrell Williams, who was Styled To Rock in a black suit with rolled sleeves and legs, polished black dress shoes and a white shirt.
He was accompanied to the gala by his new bride, model and designer Helen Lasichanh, who showed off her own unique flare for fashion in a black and emerald sequinned knee-length frock paired with black opaque tights, matching lace-up calf-length boots and a long gold necklace.

Hugh Jackman looked suave as ever as he took to the podium alongside wife Deborra-Lee Furness as they presented an award to her honoree mother, Faye Duncan.
The trio were in perfect unison in their black outfits, with the star in a dapper suit, his wife rocking pants, a top, an off-the-shoulder cardigan and platform peep-toe heels and his mother-in-law wearing a flowy dress with sheer overlay.
Not to be outdone by the hunky Aussie star, R'n'B hitmaker Usher rocked an old-school '80s look, complete with afro.
The 35-year-old U Got It Bad singer complemented his 'do with a standout glittering suit and funky bow tie and certainly succeeded in standing out as he was joined by pal Pharrell and music mogul Clive Davis.

Get Your Celebrity Fix And Career Advice In 3 Fun Reads

Standing Ovation Presentations by Robyn Hatcher
Robyn Hatcher is founder and principal of SpeakEtc, a boutique communication and presentation-skills training company based in NYC. She’s also a former actress and writer for two daytime dramas. In her new book, Standing Ovation Presentations (Motivational Press, 2013), Hatcher shares a thorough overview of communication and presentation best practices, told in a unique framework of 9 ActorTypes (e.g., Hero, Ingenue, Villain, Comic, Whiz Kid, Super Hero, Sex Symbol, Buddy, and Salty Veteran/ Curmudgeon). I’m the Villain type, and the book has given me some great ideas!
Hatcher’s book is a great example of a super fun read that also provides valuable career advice. The communication tips are excellent. There is an exhaustively detailed section on how to structure a presentation. Hatcher also covers verbal and non-verbal strategies. At the same time, there are entertainment analogies woven throughout, and there is even an exercise based on monologues from famous movies. You won’t feel like you’re reading a dry training manual even though you’re getting great training tips.
Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe
On the flip side, Rob Lowe’s Stories I Only Tell My Friends (St. Martin’s Griffin, 2012) is an autobiography and not at all an advice book. It was fascinating to read a first-hand account of movies from my tween and teen years (the chapter on The Outsiders really brought me back). Yet, there are career lessons to be gleaned amongst the intrigue and insider view of Hollywood. When Lowe writes about his preparation for The West Wing auditions, I wanted to hold that example up for my job seeking clients on how exhaustively they should prepare for their own job interviews. Reading about the difficulties that Lowe encountered – personal and professional – and what support and strategies he used to persevere are inspirational and informative even for the non-actor (even an A-list celebrity has low points!). The choices that he made in the roles he pursued (e.g., not always the highest paying), the way he took advantage of lucky breaks, and the way he created opportunities for himself are lessons for any professional navigating today’s up-and-down job market.
Celebrity, Inc. by Jo Piazza
I covered Celebrity, Inc. by Jo Piazza in an earlier post: 10 Career Lessons From Celebrities That Apply To You And Me. This book is the ultimate melding of entertainment and career, and the subtitle summarizes it completely: How Famous People Make Money. Here you can read about Taylor Hicks, former American Idol winner, and how he bounced back after being “laid off” by his record label. You can see that good general career habits matter in celebrity career management as well: a consistent personal brand (Charlie Sheen); strong work ethic (Kim Kardashian, yes, not a typo); market flexibility (Ashton Kutcher). You’ll also learn the importance of income diversification with almost every celebrity story covered.
Who says you can’t have fun while working on your career? If you love entertainment and pop culture, these 3 books will give you your celebrity fix and professional development.

Sin City 2 poster featuring amply-charmed Eva Green in sheer dressing gown deemed 'too sexy' for ratings board

The Motion Picture Association of America 'disapproved' of a Sin City: A Dame to Kill For poster featuring amply-charmed Eva Green in a sheer dressing gown.
According to Page Six, the ratings board was offended by the 'curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown.'
Dimension Film execs are reportedly 'working on a compromise with the MPAA' before the sequel opens August 22.

Too sexy? The Motion Picture Association of America 'disapproved' of a Sin City: A Dame to Kill For poster featuring amply-charmed Eva Green in a sheer dressing gown

Apparently, this sort of strict censorship 'happens all the time.'
'The movie will submit ads and the MPAA will ask for tweaks to be made,' an industry insider told E! Online. 'There's a compromise and that's it.'
As revealed in the 2006 documentary This Film is Not Yet Rated, the ratings & appeals board members have little expertise and are supposed to be parents of children 5-17 - but many aren't.
Historically, homosexual content and, in particular, sexual content involving women 'being pleasured' are scrutinized more harshly.
