So when faced with the prospect of a day at the beach, Kai Rooney was first in line to make dash for the warm sands.
The little boy was seen running along the deck as he was followed closely by father Wayne, who did his utmost to stay hot on his son's trail.
Come on, Daddy! Wayne Rooney did his utmost to
keep up with energetic son Kai as they enjoyed a family holiday in
Portugal this weekend
Clearly struggling to keep up with Kai, Wayne was then seen picking up his little boy to prevent him from running off into the sea.
Wayne and wife Coleen are on holiday with their sons Kai and Klay in Quinta do Lago, Portugal, while the football recovers from a head injury.
And Coleen is clearly enjoying the time away, tweeting on Sunday: 'Just what I've needed ..... Some quality time with my family after a hectic summer!!! Lovely few days.'
Taking control: Wayne was then seen picking up his three-year-old son to ensure he didn't dash off into the waves
Sun safety first: Coleen was seen ensuring that her eldest son had enough suncream on for the day at the beach
The 27-year-old WAG wore a neon green bikini with a blue kaftan trimmed with the bright colour as she enjoyed the warm weather.
Toting a large white bag, and wearing sunglasses, Coleen was seen making her way to a nearby restaurant with her family to grab some food in between sunbathing.
While the couple's baby son Klay is believed to be on holiday with the family, he was not seen during the trip to the beach.
Home time: At the end of the day, Wayne carried Kai on his shoulders as the group headed back to their luxury hotel
Time to go home: Kai looked unwilling to leave the beach after a fun day in the sand and surf
Beach style: Coleen wore her hair tied up in a ponytail and finished off her look with sunglasses
Later Wayne was seen carrying Kai on his shoulders, toting the little boy as he and Coleen took him back to their luxury hotel.
Throughout the day, Wayne was seen covering up his head in a white baseball cap, to conceal the large and unpleasant gash on his head which he suffered while playing for England in their qualifying World Cup games against Moldova and Ukraine.
The Manchester United striker suffered the three-inch cut in a training ground collision with team-mate Phil Jones on September 7 and cannot risk contact until the stitches come out.
His wound was revealed last Wednesday when he was pictured with his family at the Apple Jacks Adventure Park in Warrington.
Deep cut: Wayne posted this picture on his Facebook page following a nasty head injury last week
Alongside the photographs, he wrote: 'Some people seem to be questioning my commitment to the England squad.'
Wayne will not be able to play in England's next qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday night, but has been voicing his support for the team via his Facebook page.
Following the squad's 4-0 victory against Moldova, Wayne wrote: 'Great result for the lads last night, gutted I wasn't involved but made it a bit easier to see them get a convincing win. Hopefully we can do the same on Tuesday.
