Here's Why You Don't Want To Drop Off Your Used Clothes In Those Sidewalk Donation Bins

A growing number of sidewalk donation bins in New York City claiming to collect clothing for the poor are actually benefiting for-profit companies.

The New York Times reported on the scheme earlier this month, and found that the graffiti-covered bins that are illegally placed on sidewalks not only function as inconvenient eyesores throughout the city's neighborhoods, but also help greedy businesses sell used clothing in bulk to thrift stores and retailers overseas.

"They have become the bane of our existence," Kathryn Garcia, New York City's sanitation commissioner, told The New York Times. "We have seen a significant uptick in the number of clothing bins placed illegally on public sidewalks. A dramatic increase."

What does a "dramatic increase" look like? In 2010, the city placed warning tags for removal on 91 illegal bins and ended up confiscating 10. In the fiscal year 2014 (which ended last month), more than 2,006 bins were given a warning tag and 132 were confiscated.

New York City is not the exception. National trends have reflected similar patterns of scamming from coast-to-coast throughout recent years.

In 2012, Goodwill officials complained that nationwide donation bins operated by for-profit recycling businesses or nonprofits only giving a fraction of donated items to those who need it most were taking away from donations that would actually benefit the poor, USA Today reported.

The increase in misleading donation bins has led to city government crackdowns across the U.S., from California to Illinois to Florida.

"Take that extra step and find a charity or nonprofit that can really use it," CharityWatch founder Daniel Borochoff had said to USA Today. "Then you can feel good that what's given is being used."

To find a Goodwill near you, visit the organization's website.

Artists, Assume the World Is Waiting for You

Fifty years ago this week, I was twenty and I showed the mini dress in Paris Couture with my best friend Mia.

How and why did two American girls have the COURAGE to cross the Atlantic in May 1964 on an ocean-liner and think France was waiting for their new look, The Mini ?

At Parson's School of Design where we had just graduated, the head of the school, Ann Keagy had said she would not give us a recommendation to work on 7th Ave as our clothes belonged in Las Vegas and we had replied, 'We're going to Paris to show in Couture".

2014-07-22-imagebis.jpg

Mia and Vicky In French Elle 1964

Two months after graduation we were showing at Feraud in Paris couture and Elle Magazine did a five page story on the us creating the mini.

Have courage artists, assume the world is waiting for you! We did. By December 1964 we were showing the mini on the Johnny Carson Show in New York. You can bet 7th Ave opened their arms.

2014-07-22-image2.jpeg

Johnny Carson show 7 months after leaving fashion college.

This is the principle for success artists! Courage. Don't listen to the naysayers! Do your thing, follow your dreams, create the new invention in the garage like Steve Jobs, sew the new dress on your machine like Mia Fonssagrives, make the book on entertaining like Martha Stewart. Why not? Fear of failure?

We did it.

I was inspired by Coco Chanel who came from such poverty in the south of France that she grew up on a dirt floor and Coco went on to invent luxury sportswear. How? SHE SEWED A GREAT HAT.

Anna Sui told me she was inspired by us in Michigan as a student and she wrote that on a caption in my book, "It's All About The Dress". We dined together recently to discuss how the fashion world has changed.

2014-07-22-image3.jpeg

Anna Sui and Miki Kato, my fragrance director.

Today with the Internet it's so easy to create a new design and sell it without a middleman.

There are web sites galore for selling every possible design from clothes to furniture.

Today there are people who can't design who are looking for products to sell. Today there are companies who look to the future of design and are always looking for the next, next thing and a person to advise them about their product direction. That person is closer to twenty than to sixty.

Artists who are older and successful like myself are still looking for the next, next thing, which is why I wanted to stop selling myself my expensive custom couture. I had been doing that for thirty years.

I decided to personally sell on HSN TV and also sell online at affordable prices. I recently sold a wrap dress in a fabric that I had used from the sixties with 14 colors that had to be printed in France individually and the dress done today with the modern photocopy methods of printing costs less today than the dress cost in 1969.

2014-07-22-image4.jpeg

I also want to teach online and have been asked to join The Fashion University the largest online fashion school created by Francesca Sterlacci, a former department chair of F.I.T. All artists and teachers will soon want to video their expertise for posterity.

College is so expensive and four years is a long time to wait to start earning a living for an artist. Internet college is the future for artists and today's expensive live in colleges will be specific destinations for rich kids to meet friends, find wives and husbands, to network or get specific medical or legal degrees. They will not be a destination for great creators.

My parents paid 3000$ a year in 1961 for me to study fashion in NYC and 175$ a month for me to live in an garden apartment in Greenwich Village. Today I could be working in sales at Bergdorf earning 3000$ a month while I studied fashion online and then sewed my designs and sold them in the Village boutiques and on my website. I could be an entrepreneur at 17 and not 20.

The Internet allows all great artists to be launched when they are ready.

The Internet world is so small which is why Lourd, Iggy Azelea and Ariana Grande all broke into the top twenty pop chart the same week, all under 20.

This has never happened before in the history of music. Three artists in the top 10 US and English charts the same week, all three artists under 20 years old and two of them from another faraway continent. The solo dancer, Maggie Ziegler in the video from the song "Chandelier" by Sia broke out in worldwide acclaim in a month and she is only 12. Sia is up for video of the year.

The Internet discovers them and that's all she wrote.

The Internet changed our whole dynamic as artists so tell your kids and your grandkids to live out their dreams and GO FOR IT, and kids, tell your grandparents to use the money they saved for your college for a deposit on your first home, a much better investment.

Vicky Tiel began designing clothes 40 years ago in Paris and still owns a boutique there. See Vicky and her new collection on HSN and online. Her couture is available at Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus, and her perfumes are carried in Perfumania. Her memoir, It's All About the Dress: What I Learned in 40 Years About Men, Women, Sex and Fashion was published by St. Martin's Press in August 2011.

Mark Ruffalo Has His Lost Wallet Returned By Stranger After Twitter Exchange

Just when you think the world is only full of bad news and depressing stories, the smallest acts of common decency can really brighten your day.

Take Mark Ruffalo, who got a big surprise after he lost his wallet last week: The actor learned that sometimes you can depend on strangers when a man tweeted at him saying he found his wallet in a cab and wanted to know how he could return it:

"@Trezeduet thank you! Wow! Another point for the decency in people," the 46-year-old actor replied, and asked the Twitter user to send him a direct message. He added, " You are a hero!"

TMZ identified the kind Twitter user as Ross McHale, who apparently didn't recognize Ruffalo's name and had to Google him to see how he could get in touch to return the wallet.

Celebrating Oscar de la Renta's 82nd birthday and the Celebrities he Dresses

Chances are that Sarah Jessica Parker wouldn't ask most designers to prominently embroider their signature in bold red into the train of their white dress. But then again, most designers aren't Oscar de la Renta.

At this year's Met Gala, one of fashion's most important annual events and a key fundraiser for Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute, Parker made sure that reporters and photographers could see de la Renta's red scripted John Hancock was displayed in a big way on her milky white train. "Did you see his name on the back?" said the actress. "I said to Mr. de la Renta, please let me use scarlet embroidery thread, and splash your name across the back. It was my idea. He would never in a million years have done it -- he's far too modest."

The soft-spoken and elegant designer may be modest, but he's also one of our finest. For more than 50 years, he has been the go-to guy for celebrities (Oprah Winfrey, Sandra Bullock, Cameron Diaz) and first ladies (Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush) -- especially for big, big occasions like Oscars and inaugural balls.

De la Renta is the master of swathing women in silk-taffeta and chiffon masterpieces that feel more like pieces of art. As he has famously said, "There is no sound more feminine than a woman in a taffeta dress." His party dresses, with seemingly miles and miles of feather-embroidered tulle and fetching trains, continue to take our breath away. "This man has been working for more than 20 years to turn me into a fashion icon," remarked Hillary Clinton about her pal, who truly made her sparkle in 2001 when she wore his teal silk pantsuit while being sworn in as senator, and even before that made her shine in her 1997 inaugural ball gown. "Year in and year out, he's never given up."

In fact, this past Saturday, more than 60 of de la Renta's stunners went on display at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Dallas in a retrospective called "Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style," which runs until October 5. On display are gowns he made for Laura Bush, Nancy Reagan, and Hillary Clinton. There's also Jenna Bush's organza wedding dress, and an elaborate pale-blue Cinderella-esque ball gown that Amy Adams wore.

In honor of his 82nd birthday on July 22, look at some of the designer's most glamorous creations. Go to this Parade story to see who dazzles in Oscar de la Renta.

10 No-Fail Dinner Party Conversation Starters

Welcome to another installment of Tipsy Tuesday, The Salonniere's Tuesday feature that provides tips from top salonnieres on all things party-related. Today, we're getting tipsy with the no-fail questions these 10 expert hosts ask to kick-start a conversation at a cocktail or dinner party.

Alexa Hampton, interior designer and author -- I will first ask them to explain to me their work. People usually have a way they explain their job, or how they spend their day, so they can feel comfortable answering this. I also like to ask people what they are reading. Strangely, I think of this as a more personal question.

Teri Agins, fashion writer and Wall Street Journal columnist -- My favorite icebreaker is to find something to compliment them on - their outfit, hairstyle, handbag, shoes... something. I ask them to tell me about it, so the person can't just respond with a simple thank you. Then I jump in with follow-up questions and that usually gets them going.

Carla McDonald, founder, The Salonniere -- If the person is attending with his or her significant other, I like to ask, "How did you two meet?" This always puts the person at ease since it's a happy story and they've told it many times before. Also, it usually reveals enough common ground to keep the conversation rolling along for a while.

Ashley McDermott, writer and philanthropist -- I like to ask, "When and where were you happiest in your life?"

Debi Lilly, event designer and author of A Perfect Event: Inspired, Easy Elegance for Every Occasion -- I find everyone loves to eat and talk about eating and share what and where they've been eating! So I ask, "Have you been to any great new restaurants lately?"

Frederick Anderson, president of lifestyle brand, Hanley Mellon -- I ask, "If you had the opportunity to meet one person you haven't met who would it be, why and what would you talk about?"

Angella Nazaria, best-selling author and philanthropist -- My favorites are, "If you could have an alternate career, what would it be?" and "What was your most embarrassing moment?" The answers always spark a lively conversation.

Kathy Freston, the New York Times best-selling author of books about healthy living -- I can't stand small talk, so I'll turn to the table and say, "Let's talk about something that we can all learn about from one another. What do you think is the driving force in your life?"

Daniel Menaker, author of A Good Talk: The Story and Skill of Conversation -- Compliments are nice as are open-ended questions like, "How do you spend your day?" or "What's new in your world?"

Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, lifestyle and entertaining expert -- I always lean on books or travel. They are my go-to topics. So I'll say, "I'm looking for a good summer read. Have you read anything good lately?"

Everyday Sexism Isn't So Subtle When It Happens To Men

While it shouldn't take a gender-swapped video to illustrate just how skewed our treatment of women is, this one certainly does the trick.

A new video from Buzzfeed titled "If Men Were Women" shows every day scenarios -- but the genders of those involved are reversed.

One scene shows men patiently waiting for a woman to escort them home safely from a party. In another, a woman is patronizingly impressed by a man's stand up routine, reversing a familiar back-handed compliment: "It's hard to find a dude that's funny!" The video closes with a little boy somberly looking at a picture of past U.S. presidents -- all of whom are women. It's not a very encouraging picture for young boys who strive to be in politics or any leadership role for that matter. (Sound familiar?)

Experiences that are exceptionally common for women look like absurd exaggerations when applied to men, showing just how subtle and pervasive sexism can be.

What if we value people of all genders equally and call it a day? Seems fair.

Everything We Learned From Preserve, Blake Lively's New Lifestyle Website

When Blake Lively is not acting or the exercising her power as a reigning style icon, she's apparently learning lessons all about lifestyle.

On Tuesday, the star launched her highly anticipated website -- or as Lively says, "new avenue" -- called Preserve. The site blends commerce, storytelling and philanthropic efforts that cultivate what Lively described as a virtual "Main Street, USA."

world marq

As of right now, the most expensive item is a light-up marquee map of the world, which costs $2,000. And while Lively seems to be channeling her inner Gwyneth Paltrow with her new site, she has not yet offered a $90 white-tee. We're sure it's on the way.

If you think Preserve is just another Goop-in-the-making, think again. Lively wrote an introductory editor's letter to the site which lays out the differences pretty clearly. Here are some of the major things we learned from Lively:

1. Blake Lively likes enchiladas.

I am hungry, though... not just for enchiladas.

2. Despite our notions, she isn't perfect.

I don't do any one thing perfectly. I do a lot of things, though. Some well, some poorly.

3. And even though she's really famous, she's talked to regular people and wants you to know that.

I've found that when approached with a curious spirit, people are kind, they're generous, they answer, if asked.

4. Preserve isn't actually a website, in the traditional sense of the word "website."

As for how we operate, we haven't looked at Preserve as a new website, but rather as a new avenue. A sort of greatest hits of "Main Street, USA." While the whole world races to keep up with technology, we may tighten our laces and join the race, but our end goal is to preserve what's already there.

5. And even though it's called Preserve, the site does not only sell jams, jellies and canned goods.

So here at Preserve there are people, stories, essays, videos and goods which hopefully inspire your home, your style and your tongue.

6. She'll probably exaggerate an item's cool factor.

We may romanticize it, calling it treasure. What we're really saying is, we see worth on every level.

7. And most importantly, Blake Lively's new lifestyle website is not only about Blake Lively.

So Preserve.us isn't just the U.S. It's all of us.

The Head-To-Toe Guide To Shopping Marshalls' Beauty Section

Shopping for beauty products is a bittersweet experience I've yet to grow tired of. Bitter, because it means I'm spending money, but sweet because there are few pleasures in the world that compare to getting a new tub of rejuvenating body scrub.

Yet it seems that with every journey, the products get more expensive. But I've recently encountered a somewhat neglected territory: the Marshalls beauty section.

Since not all Marshalls' stores are created equal, we thought we'd do you, dear reader, a solid and break down our best finds from a recent trip.

Happy shopping!

conditioning treatments

Sure, most of us like to stick to our daily and weekly favorites-- but what about those hydrators that get really deep? Marshalls' shelves are chock-full of leave-in treatments and hair masks that will give your locks the moisture they need. There's argan and Moroccan oils galore, so don't worry about finding the right nourishment for your hair type.

GET: Theorie's Argan Oil Ultimate Reform Hair Mask, which I got for under $15 -- compared to its usual retail price of $34.

antiaging

As we get older, taking care of our skin can become an unwanted hassle. If you're not worrying about non-existent wrinkles, you're spending time totaling up the cost of the entire regimen. But, if you look hard enough you can find some excellent goods on the cheap.

GET: Stay attuned to things like eye, night and day creams, like Elizabeth Arden's Millenium Night Renewal Cream, which was under $20.

beauty tools

Marshalls is flush with tools; I found some things that have been beneficial to my routine ever since.

GET: The 8 Pro Detangler, which makes it so much easier for me to get through my curls. The section also has some quality makeup brushes, especially of the angled, blush variety.

bath body

The holy grail of Marshalls' beauty selection is the bath and body area -- you pretty much can't go wrong.

We're not only talking face cleansers, but a mix of body lotions and exfoliants, too.

GET: Ahava's Dead Sea Water Mineral Body Lotion which will give you high-end results on a drugstore budget. Or, for under $10, snag Philosophy's Footnotes scrub or, even better, Nip + Fab's Detox Blend Scrub, which caters to the entire body. I created one of the cheapest at-home spa days ever with these two products.

unique colors

The beauty (pun, intended) of the makeup section lies in its atypical offerings.

GET: You won't find your typical shade of Essie nail polish (I bought the brand's Impressionista color for half off) and there collections of because the e.l.f. shadows are eye-popping.

Clearly, we had a lot of fun without breaking the bank at Marshalls. See you there next time!

How To Throw A Wedding That Everyone Will Be Talking About

2014-07-02-brides_logocopy.jpg

By Elizabeth Mitchell for Brides

Obviously lush flowers and a gorgeous venue are some of the elements of a beautiful wedding, but picture-perfect décor doesn't ensure an epic party. Score a 10 out of 10 for overall experience by following these simple yet effective tips that will have your guests talking about your wedding for years to come.

1. Ask for song requests.

To ensure everyone is having a great time and dancing the night away, have your guests request a song via the invitation response, recommends Key Largo wedding planner Lynn D'Ascanio of Dasignerevents.com. "Give this list of songs to your DJ, along with the name of the person who requested each song. That way, if the dance floor starts to thin out, the DJ can play songs off of the request list." This pretty much guarantees that the person who requested the song will get up and dance and encourage others to do so as well.

2. Don't let your friends and family talk forever.

"Many fun events have been driven into the ground by deathly long speeches," points out Lynn Jawitz, owner of Florisan Wedding and Event Design in NYC. To keep the party popping, ask your speech givers to keep their toasts short and sweet.

3. Remember to thank your guests.

Speaking of speeches, it's important to let your guests knows how much you personally appreciate them coming. "It's hard to believe how often this simple step is overlooked," notes Jawitz. "Bite the bullet, make a speech (keep it short, of course) and just genuinely thank your guests for dropping their lives that day to share it with you."

4. And keep them in the know.

According to D'Ascanio, the best weddings are the ones that are organized and follow a timeline. "When the events of the day unfold in a timely manner, and the bridal party and guests alike are not left standing around wondering what's next or where they should go or what they should be doing, the entire day seems flawless."

5. Add in an element of surprise.

Who doesn't love a special surprise at a wedding? "You could hire a group of singers or dancers disguised as wait staff to break out into song or dance during dinner," suggests D'Ascanio. Or you and the groom could perform a practiced dance routine yourselves for the first dance, offers Greg Jenkins, founder of Bravo Productions. "A 'wow' factor can be memorable and will ensure your guests have a blast."

6. Opt for a short ceremony.

If possible, try to keep your ceremony simple and short in length. "A long, drawn-out ceremony takes away that guest energy level at the onset, and sometimes it cannot be recovered for the reception," warns Jenkins.

7. Give birthday shout outs.

Does your BFF have a birthday on the same day as your big day? Or is it his parents' anniversary too? "Have your MC acknowledge any birthdays and/or anniversaries with a dedicated song during the reception," advises Daniela Grafman, wedding & special events coordinator at Vision Entertainment Group LLC. People love attention. Plus, it's just a sweet gesture.

8. Hire a great band or DJ.

After all, they can, in fact, make or break a party. Florida wedding planner Aviva Samuels of Kiss The Planner, recommends looking for a high energy performer, while being careful not to choose an annoying personality to be your MC. "Great vocals, great dance moves and great spunk will have everyone up on their feet until it's time to go home. Seamless song transitions and the ability to read the crowd when they want to hear more of the same sound or a desire to switch to a different sound is where a DJ's talent also comes into play."

9. Provide transportation.

If you're hosting a destination wedding or your wedding is in a remote location, be sure to provide transportation for guests from their hotel to your wedding and back, says Lauren Randolph, founder of My Hotel Wedding. "This way people don't have to worry about driving home drunk, which guarantees that they can party harder."

10. Allow your guests plenty of free time.

This is particularly important if you have a destination wedding or a bunch of guests in from out of town, says professional wedding planner Sandy Malone of Weddings in Vieques. "Back to back activities after a long trip will run them into the ground. Let them have some time and space to explore and they'll be refreshed and excited at all of your events." We concur.

Selena Gomez's See-Through Top Is ... Interesting

Selena Gomez wore a see-through outfit to a press conference during the Ischia Global Film & Music Festival in Italy. This outfit involved a long-sleeve collared shirt embroidered with roses, a cute white bra to match and a skirt that maybe doesn't match. Earlier this week, Gomez wore a pretty floral maxi dress and took selfies with shirtless fans in Ischia. That looked like more fun.

5 Ways Concealer Will Change Your Makeup Game

After a late night or when faced with an unexpected acne breakout, concealer is one of the first things we reach for in our makeup bag.

And like most cosmetics, concealer has many uses beyond what it says on the label. Here are five different ways to make your life a little easier with a just a few dabs.

1. Make your lipstick last longer.

concealer lipstick

No lip liner? No problem. With an applicator or your finger, line and fill in your lips with the cover-up, making sure to blend so there aren't any uneven spots. Allow it to dry and then apply your lipstick.

Concealer helps your lip color last longer, adds dimension to the shade and prevents feathering. A dab of this product on your cupid's bow will make your lipstick radiate even more.

2. Give your lashes more volume.

Volumizing mascaras don't always do the trick, but a little concealer can help your eyelashes go the distance. With a small brush, apply a liquid formula to your lashes -- make sure to extend the brush to the tips. Then put on your mascara and marvel at the results!

3. Create the ultimate neutral eyeshadow.

concealer eyeshadow

During the morning rush, sometimes you just want something to refresh your eyes without eating up your time. Fulfill this makeup dream with cover-up.

4. Stop your eye makeup from running.

Quickly combat streaks of eyeliner and splashes of shadow by blending concealer into the problem areas -- that consistency will rub out the color, while giving you a fresh slate for touch-ups.

5. Enhance your flushed cheeks.

concealer blush

Whether you're looking to mattify your face or you want to amp up your glow, concealer will transform your bright or brooding blushes.

There are two ways to go about using concealer to enhance blush. One: Place small dots of cover-up along your cheeks and blend up with your fingertips, adding a powder blush on top. Two: Mix a little bit of concealer with a cream blush to add more warmth to your face.

Have you tried any of these concealer tricks? Let us know in the comments section!
