Arsenal's Jack Wilshere thanks Arsene Wenger for keeping World Cup dream alive as he picks No 7 shirt

There was a time, in the weeks that  followed Daniel Agger's crunching tackle on Jack Wilshere at Wembley in March, when the Arsenal midfielder got really worried.
He had broken a bone in his foot and England head coach Roy Hodgson was just weeks away from announcing his squad for this  summer's World Cup in Brazil. The clock was ticking.
'Unfortunately I have been in that position a lot,' admitted Wilshere, reflecting on his bad break during England v Denmark, as he rested between Tuesday's double training session at St George's Park.

It was then that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger came to his rescue, telling him to relax, be patient and he would go to the World Cup.
'I spoke to him because I came back into training and I was panicking a bit about the squad,' revealed Wilshere. 'I wanted to be in it. I went to him and said, “I think I'm ready”, and he said, “No, you're not, you need to train if you are going to have a good World Cup”.
I knew I would be fit, but it was just down to whether the manager thought I was ready and whether I felt ready myself as well.
'I knew as well that a bone would take six weeks (to heal). I thought I would be here, but it is down to the manager and I have to thank him for that.'

LONG LIST OF WILSHERE WORRIES

Jack Wilshere has a chequered history when it comes to injuries and has suffered in the past from sometimes playing too much, too soon.
DECEMBER 2009
Wilshere injured his ankle in October and was out for five weeks before returning for the festive fixtures. He managed only three games before tweaking a hamstring and missing another month.

OCTOBER 2012
After missing the whole of the 2011-12 season with ankle and knee problems, Wilshere returned in October and made 28 appearances before injuring his ankle in March and sitting out another five weeks.

MAY 2014
Wilshere broke his foot playing for England in March and spent nine weeks on the sidelines. Despite missing key games against Chelsea and Man City, Arsene Wenger eased Wilshere back into the side — the midfielder made just two substitute appearances at the end of the season.

52.9% Since coming back from his loan spell at Bolton in 2010, Wilshere has only been able to play in just over half of Arsenal’s games.
454 Days that Wilshere spent out after injuring his ankle in 2011. He missed a total of 66 games for Arsenal.
So it was Wenger, a Frenchman who has no specific responsibility for the welfare of the national team, who saved Wilshere's World Cup dream. It is quite a gesture by  Arsenal's manager.
Wilshere returned to the Arsenal side towards the end of the season, coming off the bench to play a part in their remarkable comeback in the FA Cup final against Hull.
'It's nice to get the first one (medal),' he admitted. As a kid growing up in Stevenage he visualised another trophy, one with even more significance than the FA Cup.
'When I was a youngster...you want to be part of that, you can only imagine what it would mean to the fans back home if we won the World Cup. That's what we will try to do. Hopefully we can create something special. I have thought about it, especially after winning the FA Cup, you saw what that meant to the Arsenal fans.'
Wilshere's eyes light up when he recalls watching his first World Cup in 1998 — 'Owen's goal... Batty's penalty' — when England went out to Argentina in a shootout.
He laughs when he is told that Luke Shaw cannot quite recall whether 2006 or 2010 was the first World Cup he watched. 'Didn't they have a TV?' he jokes.
In a couple of weeks, when the England circus arrives en masse in Brazil, a nation will watch them try to progress through the group phase.

'The young players are not used to being disappointed coming home from a World Cup so we don't know what to expect,' he added. 'We're just going over there wanting to do well. We also have the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, who have been there three or four times.'
Gerrard and Lampard are the main men around the squad, two players with senior status and the privileges that go with it. Wilshere was sitting on a sun lounger at England's training camp in Portugal last week when his phone alerted him to a text message.

'I didn't ask for it, but a text came through saying I was No 7 (he wears 10 for Arsenal). 'I'll have to get new boots with my number - Rooney wants 10, Gerrard four, Lampard eight. The senior players pick the numbers and we get the rest. So I have No 7. Bryan Robson, David Beckham wore it, so it is nice to get that number. Beckham was my hero growing up as well so it is quite nice.'
This summer it will be the turn of the new breed to make an impact as England prepare to play Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in their opening three group games.

Wilshere has only won 15 caps because of his recurring injury problems, but Hodgson remains a huge fan of the midfielder's technical ability. While he prefers to play in 4-2-3-1, 'as we do at Arsenal', Wilshere is realistic enough to know that he is simply fighting for a place in England's midfield with Jordan Henderson and Ross Barkley.
England's head coach is demanding that little bit more from his players now, pushing them as they prepare for Friday's friendly with Peru at Wembley.
'He can lose it (with the players) a little bit, but if someone isn't doing it he has every right to do that,' he added.
There will also come a time when the team prepare for the possibility of a penalty shootout and Wilshere will be one of the first to put up his hand.
'I read that the boss (Wenger) said I'm not a penalty taker. Cheers boss! It's strange actually because we did penalties before and I scored mine. Maybe he just thinks English people can't take penalties. But we have some good penalty takers here. Rickie Lambert is great at penalties, Gerrard is great at penalties.
'I took one at Bradford away in the Carling Cup. I know that is a bit different to playing in Brazil at a World Cup, but I scored and I'd be happy to take one.'

Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League celebration 'was for secret movie' according to reports in Spain: 'Ronaldo: The Movie'

Reports in Spain suggest that Cristiano Ronaldo ripped off his shirt in front of the cameras when celebrating his Champions League final goal because he was being filmed for his movie.
The Portuguese superstar scored a penalty in the closing minutes of extra-time to round off a 4-1 victory, and he celebrated by taking off his shirt and flexing his muscles.
His celebration seemed rather excessive given that the game was already won, and reports say that Ronaldo knew where to stand for cameras to pick him up and capture the celebration.

Mauro Icardi marries Wanda Nara... months after Argentinian model split from his former team-mate Maxi Lopez

Mauro Icardi and Wanda Nara's controversial relationship reached a new level on Tuesday as the couple married in Buenos Aires.
Nara (or Icardi as she will now be called) is the ex-wife of Maxi Lopez, but publicly split from the Argentine to hook up with compatriot and Inter Milan striker Icardi in November 2013.
Icardi and Lopez famously clashed during a Serie A game between Sampdoria and the Nerazzurri in April, with the latter refusing to shake the 21-year-old's hand.

The wedding took place by civil union and was in front of only 12 invited guests, with the groom in jeans. Unsurprisingly, Lopez wasn't one of them.
The former Barcelona forward looked after Icardi when he first came to Italy and the pair spent lots of time together and with Lopez's then wife Nara, as well as the couple's three children.
The love triangle between the two players and Argentinian WAG Nara was exposed in November 2013 when it was revealed Icardi had made moves on his former friend's wife as their marriage fell apart.
The Inter Milan forward took to Twitter to declare: 'I love you [Wanda Nara], it will never be easy to say what I feel, because I discovered that those two words ('I love you' = 'te amo' in Spanish) carry with them one feeling without limits!'
The tweet coincided with an interview given by Nara released by Revista People, in which the model revealed: 'It’s been three months since my husband had sex. Maxi has neglected me. Although I’ve been living in luxury, I am also living with hidden pain.
'I think the time has passed for me to save my family. I will not fight for the money, because he knows me.'

My decision to leave Liverpool for Chelsea 'destroyed' Gerrard, claims £50m Blues flop Torres

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has revealed the pain he caused Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard when he told him he was leaving Anfield for Stamford Bridge three years ago.
The striker signed for Chelsea in a £50million deal in January 2011, on the same day Liverpool signed Andy Carroll from Newcastle for £35m.
Torres scored 81 goals in 142 games for the Reds, playing arguably the best football of his career and even though his form dipped at the end of time there, the Anfield faithful was understandably miffed to see his leave - as, it seems, was Gerrard.

Euphoria: Torres says he doubts that he'll ever find a team-mate as compatible to his style of play as Gerrard

'One day, Steven Gerrard came to say to me, "Fernando, now, you have to think of yourself. Do what you have to do",' Torres told French magazine So Foot.

'But when I went to tell him that I was going to accept the Chelsea offer, it destroyed him. Announcing my departure from Liverpool to Gerrard was one of the most difficult moments of my career.
'He was my best team-mate and I am not sure of finding another like him in the future. We were made for each other.'
Torres added that he felt he had to leave Liverpool at that time in order to win trophies.

Xabi Alonso during his Liverpool playing days
Key departures: Torres says Liverpool failed to replace Javier Mascherano (left) and Xabi Alonso adequately

'At Liverpool, I had almost everything but titles. There, I felt like a king but the team was falling apart.

'The directors had sold [Javier] Mascherano to Barca, then Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid without investing any of the money to compensate for the departure of these two key players.
'I was 27, I wanted to know what it was like to lift the Champions League and I had the feeling it was not going to happen with Liverpool.
'Then they were in full transition, the club was being sold and in that case, unless you are Manchester City or PSG, it can be a long road before you are again competitive.'
Struggle: Despite winning the Champions League, things haven't worked out at Chelsea for Torres

And even though Torres went on to realise his dream of lifting the Champions League with Chelsea, his form has been patchy and as a result, he was in and out of the team under the management of Carlo Ancelotti, Andre Villas-Boas and Roberto Di Matteo.
'At the time, David Luiz and myself went to see Ancelotti together because we had been the last arrivals, we were told we would be important, but, in reality, we weren't playing. They finished by saying to us: 'We are going to finish the season with the team that started it'.'

'I understood nothing of what had happened. I started to know the experience of the bench. I reassured myself by saying things would soon change. Villas-Boas arrived, then Di Matteo but it was always the same: one day I played, the next not.'

France international Olivier Giroud to sign new contract with Arsenal after FA Cup Triumph

The France international, who struck twice in a friendly against Norway on Monday night, hopes to extend his stay in north London and is confident that he can continue to developOlivier Giroud Adrian Arsenal West Ham United Premier League 04152014 Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has revealed that he is in negotiations with the club with a view to extending his contract beyond 2016.

The 27-year-old scored 22 goals last season in all competitions as Arsene Wenger's side again secured Champions League qualification and ended their nine-year wait for a trophy by winning the FA Cup final against Hull City.

Giroud, who signed from Montpellier for €12 million two summers ago, has become an integral part of the Arsenal side since the departure of Robin van Persie and is intent on building on recent successes.

"I have two years left on my contract [until June 2016] but we are in negotiations to extend. For now, I am here. There are many great things to do," he told footmercato.net.

"I feel comfortable in the Premier League. My first season not too bad, I had a pretty good second. I hope to do even better [next season]. I am progressing from year to year, the same as the team."

Giroud was part of the Montpellier team who made history by winning Ligue 1 in 2011-12, his performance as top scorer earning his move to the Emirates Stadium.

He scored two goals for France on Monday night as Les Bleus warmed up for the World Cup with a 4-0 friendly victory over Norway.
