Bacary Sagna should be fondly remembered at Arsenal... unlike fellow former Gunners RVP, Nasri and Adebayor

Another year gone, and another Arsenal first-team player has opted for pastures new. But unlike Robin van Persie two years ago, Bacary Sagna should not be subject to abuse.
The right back announced on Thursday that it was a certainty he will be leaving this summer, declining the club's final three-year contract offer of £80,000-a-week.
And even though Sagna looks to be joining a host of former Gunners at Manchester City, it's hard to blame a player who has been a loyal servant at the Emirates Stadium.
Time to go: Bacary Sagna has confirmed he will leave Arsenal in the summer

Silver lining: Sagna ended his Arsenal career by winning the FA Cup
Silver lining: Sagna ended his Arsenal career by winning the FA Cup

The France defender was signed for £7.5million in 2006, and has fought admirably during a eight-year stint which has provided little success.
Signing on with the hope of joining Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires as Les Bleus who  lifted multiple trophies in north London, a fourth-place finish and limited European joy was the new realistic target.
In the midst of the lowest lows, Sagna was always one who would roll his sleeves up, never give in and urge team-mates to pick themselves up. It's no wonder Arsene Wenger was so keen to break his 'no long contract for over-30s' rule to keep one of his most consistent performers.
Sportsmail understands a £150,000-a-week deal with City has been lined up, leading to many Arsenal fans to criticise Sagna for 'showing no respect' and taking one final pay check.
But after eight years of being heralded as one of the best full backs in the league with barely anything in the shape of trophies to back that up, is it not just one final challenge for a player still at his peak?
Put simply, if it was about moving for silverware (as Samir Nasri justifies his move to Manchester City) right now is not the time to do it.

ROBIN VAN PERSIE IN 2011

'Anything we win here will come from the heart and that’s what I want.
'It’s my dream and I see no point in speaking about other teams when I have these dreams.
'I think other people know that about me; I’m just hungry to win with Arsenal and that’s it.'
Sagna's reaction at the end of that FA Cup final win, nine years after their last triumph, said it all. Success is all he wanted at a club he obviously loves, and now he's got that, why not let him respond to other club's advances? He, and the fans, have got what they wanted.
After one of his finest seasons in an Arsenal shirt battling back from injury, it's the least Sagna deserves.
This stance was not applicable to Robin van Persie, Nasri and Emmanuel Adebayor's exits, though.
Van Persie, back in 2011, said: 'I’m sure I could win things at another team in another country, but would it feel like our trophy, my trophy? I’m not sure it would.
'Anything we win here will come from the heart and that’s what I want. It’s my dream and I see no point in speaking about other teams when I have these dreams. I think other people know that about me; I’m just hungry to win with Arsenal and that’s it.'
Those quotes - along with the pictures of Van Persie surrounded by Arsenal bedsheets and posters as a youngster - were music to fans' ears at the time, but now seem fake and twisted.
The club stuck by the Dutchman through countless seasons as he struggled with various knocks, but after one-and-a-half injury-free seasons scoring goals he had made his decision.
A move to Manchester United followed, and Van Persie even went on to write an open letter to Arsenal criticising their ambition. The respect was long gone after that.

Nasri had the chance to be the 'next Cesc Fabregas' after the Spaniard left for his boyhood club Barcelona (something he always admitted he was planning to do). Nasri could have been the hero of a side in need of one, he could have repaid Wenger for putting trust in him at such a young age.
He has been accused of taking the 'easy way out' of Arsenal, quitting as soon as some sort of crisis became apparent, and as soon as a suitable club threw money at him.
The departure of Adebayor - along with Kolo Toure and Gael Clichy - wasn't so critical on the pitch, but the Togolese angered fans with his attitude (and not least for sprinting the length of the pitch to celebrate a goal for Manchester City against Arsenal back in 2009).
He constantly flirted with AC Milan, and in fact Wenger was fortunate to pocket £25m for the striker.

Bad move: Adebayor celebrates scoring for City in front of the Arsenal fans
Bad move: Adebayor celebrates scoring for City in front of the Arsenal fans

All this is in such contrast to Sagna, who was humble about his exit. Take his quotes in L'Equipe: 'It was an honour to grow in the shirt,' he said. 'Arsenal is a club that brought me a lot, both as a person and as a sportsman. Even though we had been criticised for quite some time due to the lack of trophies, I spent some magical moments (at Arsenal). If I had to do, I’d do it again.'
Out of all that, his admission that he would do it again really stands out. At 31 years of age, the time is right for Sagna to bow out, and Arsenal can look for a younger, and perhaps cheaper alternative.
Serge Aurier, Calum Chambers and Atsito Uchida have been linked with a move, but they will find it hard to match Sagna's ability, not least his dedication.
The time is right for a thanks, and good luck.

Barcelona legend, Carles Puyol retires to take up new role at the Catalan club

The side's former captain has hung up his boots and will work alongside sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta from next SeptemberCarles Puyol se despide del Barcelona Former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has retired from the game and will take up a new role at Camp Nou next season, the Catalan club announced on Friday.

Puyol played 593 official first-team games for Barca between 1998 and this year, but had already announced his decision to leave the club this summer following several seasons blighted by knee problems.

The former Spain defender, who is 36, had been considering a move to a smaller side to extend his playing days, but has instead opted to take up a new post at Barca alongside sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta.

"I want to say thank you to FC Barcelona for everything they have given me and also for this new opportunity," Puyol said in a statement on the club's official website.

"I have always played football and I tried to do that as well as possible. I will do the same here," he added. "I need some time to rest and some more treatment on my knee, but I'm really excited by this new chapter."

Puyol will work with Zubizarreta, who is hoping to sign several players for the Catalan club this summer, including a replacement for the popular defender.

"Puyol joins us in the football area and we will try to take advantage and learn from all his experience," Zubizarreta explained. "He'll be an assistant on the sporting side and he'll work with me in all of the club's projects - both internal and external.

"He'll be close to all of the teams, it's a unique opportunity. For a couple of years we have been talking about what is best for him and I'm sure he'll soon see what it is that he likes doing the most."

Arsene Wenger on his Arsenal future, Transfer plans and how the club plans to move forward after signing contract extension

Arsene WengerI want to stay and to continue to develop the team and the club. I think I can do that and the club shares the same view so I will of course put full commitment in to try to do it. on his new contract showing the faith the club has in him…
Yes, because the club has always shown faith in me and I'm very grateful for that. We have gone through fantastic periods and periods where we have to stick together and every time when that togetherness was tested I got the right response. I think I have shown some loyalty as well towards this club and hopefully we can make some more history. I am sure we can.
on building another great Arsenal team…
It's time for another one [to emerge]. It's the start of a new team and I believe [the FA Cup] victory was crucial in that belief. We have shown signs the whole season that we can be a great side and now it's [important] of course to have another successful season. We know we have to… have a successful June and July, that's where you strengthen the team. It's very important that we are good now in the next two months until the end of August, that we can give to the team some more quality and go into next season with the belief we got from [the FA Cup] win.
It's the start of a new team and I believe [the FA Cup] victory was crucial in that belief
on the fans expecting a big summer…
Yes, they should expect that. What I can promise is that we work very hard on a market that is very, very congested with many people who have a lot of money. But we have a big advantage, players want to join us and if we find the right quality I'm sure we can strengthen the team.
on the club being in a strong position…
I believe so because the fact that we have built a stadium, the fact that we have paid a big part of the debt back and the weight of the debt back now is not as strong and heavy as it was before. The fact that the Financial Fair Play rule comes in hopefully will stop [the] craziness that happened on this [transfer] market. With these two [things] together, I think we can fight on a more even level than before.
on this being Arsenal's time…
We fight for that, we want moments like this [cup success] every year. We were close, it was a very close race in the Premier League and in the FA Cup we won it. We had a very hard run in the FA Cup when you look at the teams we played. We have shown remarkable consistency and spirit the whole season. We were a bit short in the end to win the Premier League but at least we have shown some quality.
on his message to the fans…
My overall is message is personally I'm very grateful to the support the club has. This has become an immense club with the support we've got all over the world, and personally on behalf of everybody here at the club, the directors, the staff, the players, we are very grateful and thankful for that.

#WengerSigns: Wenger signs contract extensionwith Arsenal

Arsene WengerArsenal manager Arsène Wenger has signed a new three-year extension to his current contract, taking his tenure at the club to May 2017.
Wenger has been with Arsenal for 17 years, making him the longest-serving and most successful manager in the history of the club.
He is the longest-serving current manager in English football, has won eight major trophies and has qualified for the Champions League for 17 consecutive years, a record equalled only by Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Wenger, who has now taken charge of 1,010 Arsenal matches, said: “I want to stay and to continue to develop the team and the club. We are entering a very exciting period. We have a strong squad, financial stability and huge support around the world. We are all determined to bring more success to this club.
“The club has always shown faith in me and I'm very grateful for that. We have gone through fantastic periods and also periods where we have had to stick together. Every time when that togetherness was tested I got the right response. I think I have shown some loyalty as well towards this club and hopefully we can make some more history. I am sure we can.”
We are entering a very exciting period. We have a strong squad, financial stability and huge support around the world. We are all determined to bring more success to this club
Arsenal chairman, Sir Chips Keswick, said: “We are delighted that Arsène has renewed his contract for a further three years. He is a man of principle, who lives and breathes Arsenal. He has established Arsenal for its exciting playing style around the world, continues his commitment to young players and has the ability to bring top-class players to the club. I have no doubt we have an exciting future ahead of us with him leading the team.”
Arsenal’s majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke, said: “Sustained excellence is the hardest thing to achieve in sport and the fact Arsenal has competed at the top of the game in England and Europe throughout the time Arsène has been manager, is the ultimate testimony to his consistency of performance, talent and ambition.
"We are delighted with the FA Cup success which has added to his already outstanding record. Under his guidance we look forward to adding more trophies in future seasons.”
Wenger, 64, has led Arsenal to three league titles, five FA Cups and four Charity/Community Shields, including two league and cup doubles in 1998 and 2002. He is the only Arsenal manager to have won the FA Cup more than once and the only manager to take the club to a Champions League final.
He was the first manager in English league history to complete an entire 38-match season unbeaten, achieving that feat in 2003/04 on the way to the club’s historic 49-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.
Wenger joined Arsenal from Japanese side Nagoya Grampus in October 1996. He also managed in his home country France, where he was manager at AS Monaco and Nancy, assistant manager at Cannes, and worked in the youth section at Strasbourg.
In addition to his honours at Arsenal, Wenger has also won the French League championship (1988); French Cup (1991); French Manager of the Year (1988) (all with AS Monaco); Japan’s Manager of the Year (1995); the Japanese Emperor’s Cup (1996) and the Japanese Super Cup (1996) (Grampus).

Cristiano Ronaldo is a World Cup matchwinner - Dortmund playmaker Marco Reus

Watch the BVB star interview himself, discussing the challenge Portugal will pose in the group stage this summer and his inner belief, to mark the launch of PUMA Tricks boots

Marco Reus PUMA evoPOWER Tricks Interview Marco Reus has stressed that Germany will be wary of matchwinner Cristiano Ronaldo when they face Portugal in the World Cup.

Joachim Low's men face the fellow Euro 2012 semi-finalists in their opening game of Group G hoping to gain an advantage ahead of further clashes with Ghana and USA.

Reus, who is featuring in his first World Cup this summer, stressed the quality of the Portugal captain and all-time top goalscorer and believes every tie in Brazil will be tough.

"Portugal are an extremely strong team, with an outstanding individual player: Cristiano Ronaldo" the Borussia Dortmund attacker said in a new self-interview to mark the launch of PUMA Tricks. "He can decide a match on his own.

"USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann has lots of experience and he has built a solid team. As we saw at the World Cup in 2006 [when he coached Germany to the semis], he can take teams far in the tournament.

"There won't be an easy opponent."

#StartBelieving | Reus is confident that he and his PUMA Tricks boots can make their mark in Brazil

Reus is in contention to be a key player in the starting XI for Germany this summer and insists he always had faith that he could feature in the tournament and play a role in winning the trophy.

"Yes, of course [I always believed I'd play in the World Cup], you have to believe in yourself," the German added. "It's vital not just in football but in day-to-day life.

"You also need a bit of luck, you need talent and determination. But you definitely need belief, that's for sure. It's my first World Cup so I'm feeling really motivated. I'm eager to play a big part and start as many games as possible."

Reus is among a number of global superstars who will be sporting the new PUMA Tricks boots in Brazil this summer.

Filipo Inzaghi: I'm ready for the AC Milan job

The former Italy international has set his sights on the position of head coach amid speculation the San Siro side are ready to part company with Clarence Seedorf

Milan youth team coach Filippo Inzaghi Filippo Inzaghi is ready to replace Clarence Seedorf as AC Milan coach if the club decide to sack the Dutchman.
Seedorf is widely expected to be relieved of his duties after just four months in charge of the San Siro side and 40-year-old Inzaghi has been lined up to take his place ahead of the 2014-15 campaign.
"Excited by what I'm reading? Who doesn't get emotional about what they read? Milan is my life and my story," he told the Milan Channel.
"I've stopped playing for Milan but I do everything they ask of me. We'll see what happens, I'm a Milan employee until 2016.
"I could have left but I wanted to stay because I have a contract here. That's the path I will follow.
"If some good news is communicated to me then great. Otherwise, I am proud to continue coaching the Primavera team."
However, Inzaghi insists that he has heard nothing beyond the media speculation surrounding his future.
"I have had no other communications about it until now, other than what has been written.
"I am a Milan employee. Of course, if Milan call and ask me to fulfil another role I will be very happy, but if not I will remain to coach the Primavera as I have always done."
Seedorf replaced Massimiliano Allegri as Milan coach in January, but failed to qualify for European football.

Manchester City consider Fabregas move as Yaya Toure situation deteriorates

The Premier League champions are keeping a close eye on the Spaniard's situation as their patience with the Ivorian and his agent Dimitri Seluk wears thin

Cesc Fabregas Barcelona La Liga
Manchester City are keeping tabs on Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas as the club's relationship with Yaya Toure becomes increasingly strained, Goal understands.

Earlier this month it was revealed that the Catalan giants have put Arsenal and Manchester United on alert by preparing to listen to offers for Fabregas this summer.

But City are also monitoring the 27-year-old's situation, particularly in light of recent comments by Toure and his agent Dimitri Seluk which have cast doubt on the Ivorian's future at the club.

Last week Seluk claimed Toure felt disrespected and "very upset" after allegedly being ignored by City's owners on his 31st birthday when the squad arrived in United Arab Emirates to celebrate their Premier League title triumph.

Toure has since publicly endorsed his agent's comments and escalated tensions further on Tuesday by admitting it would be "an honour" to play for Paris Saint-Germain in an interview with France Football, though later clarified that he merely enjoyed being "coveted" by a club of the French champions' standing.

But City are losing patience with Toure and are determined not to be bullied into giving the Ivorian an improvement on his current €280k-a-week contract, which was agreed only last summer and runs until 2017.

In fact, there is a growing sense that the Premier League champions will not put up a huge fight to keep their star midfielder if the right bid comes in, despite a remarkable return of 21 goals and nine assists in 42 matches in all competitions this season.

At 27, Fabregas is four years younger than Toure and the Spain international will sit down for talks with senior Barcelona officials this summer as he enters the final two years of his current contract.

United - who tabled two bids for Fabregas last summer - retain an interest in the player, as do Arsenal, who have first refusal and a buy-back clause believed to be set at the fixed price of €29 million.

Arsene Wenger explored the possibility of exercising the first-option clause last summer, and is understood to have talked on the phone "quite a bit" with his former captain about the prospect of a return to north London.

Fabregas joined Barcelona from Arsenal for €40m in the summer of 2011 but struggled find a regular starting position in his first two seasons, both under Pep Guardiola and the late Tito Vilanova.

The 27-year-old enjoyed more prominent status under Tata Martino this term, notching nine goals and 14 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions as the Catalan giants endured a rare trophyless campaign.

But he has found himself singled out by a section of Barcelona fans during the team's struggles and was left out of photographs promoting the club's new kit earlier this month, further fuelling speculation over his future.

However, president Josep Maria Bartomeu has dismissed reports linking Fabregas to a move away this summer, insisting: "We don't want to sell players. Barca do not want to sell Cesc Fabregas, or see other players leave in the market."

Meanwhile, Toure has publicly admitted he would like to retire at Camp Nou, where he enjoyed three hugely successful years before joining City for €32m in the summer of 2010.

But Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta played down reports linking the club with a move for the Ivorian on May 21, saying: "I won't comment on stories that come from Twitter. It's a wonderful world, but we deal with reality."

Real Madrid hit with partial stadium closure following racist incident

European football's governing body has taken action against the Champions League winners following incident during the home win over Bayern Munich

Estadio Santiago BernabĂ©u Uefa has ordered the partial closure of the Santiago Bernabeu for one match following racist behaviour by Real Madrid fans during the 1-0 Champions League win over Bayern Munich in April.

The Spanish giants recorded a narrow win over the Bundesliga giants that eventually set them on their way to Champions League glory, but part of their stadium will be shut down for their next home game in European competitions following incidents that took place during the game.

"The Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body has handed down sanctions to Real Madrid following incidents during their Champions League semi-final first leg against Bayern Munichen in the Spanish capital on 23 April," an official statement reads.

"Following the charge of racist behaviour by Real Madrid supporters during the match (Article 14 of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations), the Control and Disciplinary Body has ordered the partial closure of the Santiago Bernabeu for one match. More specifically, sectors 120 and 122 of the stadium will be closed for the club's next Uefa competition home game.

"Real Madrid are obliged to display a banner with the wording 'No to Racism' in those sectors."

The fight against racism is a high priority for Uefa and European football's governing body has a zero-tolerance policy towards racism and discrimination, both on the pitch and in the stands.

All forms of racist behaviour are considered serious offences against the disciplinary regulations and are severely punished.

Arsene Wenger agrees new three-year Arsenal contract...Frenchman to sign dotted line in days

Arsene Wenger will put pen to paper on his new Arsenal contract in the next few days after agreeing terms on a deal that will keep him at the club until 2017.
Wenger ended any doubt over his future by confirming he will stay at the club beyond the summer after winning the FA Cup earlier this month.
There had been concerns that the 64-year-old Frenchman could quit if he failed to end the Gunners' nine-year trophy drought, but Wenger revelled in the Wembley victory against Hull and pledged to stay in north London.

Arsenal have handed Wenger a £24million contract and £100m transfer kitty. Sportsmail understands Wenger will sign a deal worth in the region of £8m-per-season in wages.
And he will be given the biggest transfer budget in Arsenal history to help him win the Premier League title for the first time since 2004.
Wenger has been re-invigorated after watching his team beat Hull in the FA Cup final - the fifth time he has lifted the trophy as Arsenal boss - and will now stay at the Emirates.

Asked if the new deal would be signed, he said: ‘Yes - because I go to Brazil on June 10.’
The length of the deal is viewed as a significant statement of unwavering support from the club’s hierarchy. And they will also give Wenger the all clear to go on an unprecedented spending spree this summer to ensure the club build upon their FA Cup success.
Wenger has led Arsenal to three Premier League titles and five FA Cups since joining from Japanese club Nagoya Grampus Eight 18 years ago.
Arsenal led the Premier League for much of last season before fading to fourth, good enough to secure Champions League football for a 17th successive year. But next season the pressure will be on Wenger to mount a serious title challenge.
Former Gunners goalkeeper Bob Wilson, who served as goalkeepers' coach in the early years of Wenger's Arsenal reign, told BBC Radio 5 Live: 'This is a guy who works 24 hours a day all year around.
'He hates to lose and revolutionised the game in the country. Some say he has too much power but a guy who dedicates himself to it like he does, you cherish.
'Every club who has built a new ground in this country have all been relegated. Why? Because of the stranglehold of the debt of a new ground. Arsene and Arsenal have got through that stage by still qualifying for the Champions League.'

It's going bad for One Direction as 11-year-old fans say: We want to try drugs too after Zayn Malik's video

One Direction faced mounting pressure to apologise yesterday as it emerged they had inspired young fans to experiment with drugs.
Children as young as 11 vowed on social networking sites to try cannabis for the first time, saying one of the band members looked ‘hot’ in a video of him smoking it.
The pledges by youngsters to copy the boys came as fans and parents tried selling their tickets for upcoming gigs online – for half the face value.

Anger: Critics have urged One Direction's two members to apologise after children praised the 'joint' video
Viagogo, the world’s largest ticket marketplace, saw a 79 per cent spike in people trying to get rid of the tickets in the 24 hours after the footage emerged.
Tickets for the majority of the concert venues – including Wembley stadium and Manchester’s Etihad stadium were being sold for as little as £24, with reduced tickets also available on sites such as Gumtree.
Last night drug campaigners reacted with fury after the boy band still refused to say sorry, despite calls from fans, parents and politicians.
One charity branded the stars ‘stupid young men dicing with death’ and said it was ‘horrendous’ they had not yet apologised or showed any remorse.
Just hours after the Daily Mail’s website published footage of Louis Tomlinson, 22, and Zayn Malik, 21, smoking a ‘joint’ before performing in South America last month, they were back on stage in the UK.
On Wednesday they played the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, on the first leg of a two-week tour.
Tomlinson appeared tired and weary on stage – having allegedly struggled to sleep since the fallout – but he showed no signs of regret to the thousands of screaming young girls in the crowd.

Malik barely said a word during the 90-minute show.
After seeing the footage, fans began tweeting using the hashtag ‘#zouispassmethatblunt’ – an amalgamation of the boys’ names followed by another term for a ‘joint’.
One fan wrote: ‘I just turned 11 and idk [I don’t know] what a blunt is but I wanna [sic] smoke it #zouispassmethatblunt.’
Another added: ‘I know that marijuana isn’t good for us … but damn I want to try smoking weed with them.’
A Twitter user called Anthika wrote: ‘Zayn smoking weed is hot. I wanna try weed one day …’
But despite the Mail yesterday making the band aware of the potentially harmful effect their actions have had on young fans, a One Direction spokesman said their only comment was still: ‘This matter is in the hands of our lawyers.’
Lucy Dawe, of charity Skunk Sense, told the Mail: ‘They’ve got these young people that are hanging on to every word they say and instead of showing them how to behave, they are being the worst role models they could possibly be and encouraging young people to do something that could seriously damage their health.

‘It is absolutely devastating. The young girls have absolutely no clue of the dangers of cannabis. They are stupid young men, dicing with death.’
A number of £30 seats at the band’s Sunday show in Manchester were offered for £15 online and a £42.50 ticket for Wembley was advertised at £24. A seller on Gumtree had listed their ticket for £0 and asked for someone to make an offer.
A Viagogo spokesman said many ‘bargain’ tickets were now on sale at ‘half the box office price’.
StubHub, a ticket re-sale firm owned by eBay, yesterday said there were 4,000 One Direction tickets available on the site. Many of the band’s young admirers turned on their former idols by posting photos of themselves ripping or burning their tickets.
Half an hour before the Sunderland gig this week, band member Liam Payne tweeted: ‘Right everybody concert times lets try and keep the pg rating for Christ sake somebody help me restore sanity.’
Fellow member Harry Styles was said to be furious with Tomlinson and Malik. A source told the Sun: ‘Harry is annoyed … [he] thinks it was a stupid and reckless thing for Louis to allow to be filmed in the first place.’

JAN MOIR EXCLUSIVE: One Direction's Video, Tom Cruise, Kate Middleton and #BGT

No, I don't suppose Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik smoking a joint is the end of civilisation as we know it. The walls of Jericho will not come tumbling down.
Life will go on for One Direction and their millions and millions of teeny supporters — but it will never be quite the same. In the fevered relationship between band and fan, something fundamental has been broken. Trust.
This week, footage emerged of Louis and Zayn smoking marijuana in a van en route to a concert in Peru. They appeared to be filming each other while indulging in some excruciating rapper talk, boasting about the drugs they were consuming, looking forward to consuming more drugs in the future.
Hemmed inside the van by police outriders, speeding between hotel and concert, the film seemed to sum up the claustrophobia of their existence rather than suggest joyous debauchery. But it still made for grim viewing.
Between them, the two young men dropped an abbreviated version of the N-word; referred to the police as ‘the po-po’; and homophobically referred to some of their own One Direction merchandise as ‘gay’ because they thought it was inferior.
God, it’s almost too embarrassing for words, but who wasn’t embarrassing at the age of 20, even when not breaking the law? And from The Beatles to The Bay City Rollers, has there ever been a teeny-bop band as clean-cut as their wholesome images suggested?
Yet One Direction are in a cynical class of their own. That’s why I feel they simply cannot brush off this incident as an irrelevance, a fuss about nothing, a ‘what’s the big deal’?
Especially as they are a pop group who have keenly cultivated a global fan-base predicated on the — we now understand — falsehood that they are kind, clean-cut, sweet, polite and good-living.
Connection: They are the first boy band to become hugely successful by directly engaging with the Directioners
Connection: They are the first boy band to become hugely successful by directly engaging with the Directioners

Even worse, they were the first boy band to become hugely successful by directly engaging with the Directioners (as their most devoted fans call themselves) on social media.
Harry, Niall, Zayn, Liam and Louis tweeted, flirted and made direct appeals to the little girls who worshipped them. Love us, adore us, download our new songs on iTunes, they would beseech.
They fostered the notion that they and the Directioners are all friends together in this big, crazy adventure; that their special fan/band dynamic is one built on mutual love, respect and affection. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. It is a relationship built on cold, hard cash in an aggressive and hugely successful commercial enterprise.
One Direction are the biggest-selling group in the world. And their rise to the top has been cynical and exploitative, even by grasping music industry standards.
So they can’t have it both ways. They cannot shake down millions of little girls, emptying their piggy-banks and pink plastic purses of all their pocket money without feeling even a whisker of responsibility.

They cannot encourage the wide-eyed teenies to love and adore them, then snicker and mock the books and products they encourage their fans to buy. They just can’t — but they just did. No wonder parents are annoyed.
All that mums and dads ask of groups such as One Direction is that they repay their faith and financial investment by staying squeaky clean until their 15 minutes of fame are over or their daughters grow up — whichever happens first. What they do after that is entirely their own business.
Yet One Direction have failed to keep their part of the bargain.
Is this the beginning of the end?
In the tuck shop of pop, bands don’t come any more manufactured. They were put together in 2010 by Simon Cowell from a bunch of X Factor rejects, and from then till now the members have done very little to improve their musicianship, to learn a musical instrument or even write a song.
Like so many before them, they take fame for granted, raking in the cash and feeling it will never end.
Some people sneer and say ‘pop star takes drugs’ — what is the big deal? Actually, in this instance, it is a big deal. Surely Louis and Zayn should be more responsible towards their impressionable fan-base.
Charismatic Harry Styles has already distanced himself from their antics, so I suspect a solo career for him cannot be far off and that One Direction will be heading in different directions before long.
‘No more media attention, please,’ said sanctimonious band member Liam Payne this week, as the group launched the first of their stadium shows in Britain.
If they carry on like this, without a word of apology or explanation, then they won’t have to wait too long to be ignored.
Depressing news from a  survey that reveals a lack of knowledge about nature. Some British schoolchildren had no idea where potatoes come from, thought that chocolate bars grew in the ground and had no idea what a spade or a conker was for. Next thing you know, they will believe that hamburgers come from horses. Oh, wait a minute...

What did Tom do to deserve this?

In a safari park, an elephant took a photograph of itself after a tourist dropped a camera — the first ever ‘elfie’.
I was reminded of this when TV presenter Susanna Reid took a selfie of herself and Tom Cruise on the red carpet this week.

Selfie joy: TV presenter Susanna Reid looked over the moon when she snapped herself with Tom Cruise

She seemed as pleased as someone who had just painted a masterpiece and heard it was going to be hung in the Uffizi gallery in Florence. Even dopey elephants with no fingers and thumbs can do it, Susanna! It’s just not that clever.
I believe Tom Cruise should never be forgiven for that Irish accent and thatched hairstyle in the film Far And Away, but what did he do to deserve this?
Susanna was hanging off his  arm like someone who had just escaped from a high-security unit after developing a resistance to Tasers and tranquilisers. Never a good look.
Last week, I wrote how brave it was of golfer Rory McIlroy to call off his engagement to Caroline Wozniacki after having doubts about getting married. Now we hear he broke up with her over the phone. I take it all back! How could he? The brute.

I'll fetch my sewing kit, Kate

Following bare-cheeked revelations in a German tabloid, an Australian newspaper has also printed photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge’s bare bottom. Oh, no!
Following the decision of British newspapers to politely pixilate her derriere, the Sydney Daily Telegraph brashly ran the pictures under the headline: ‘My bare lady: Derri-heir to the throne is fair game.’
I don’t know which is worse; all bottom or a pixelated bottom. Either way, it looked like an incredibly guilty bottom. Kate is such a smashing duchess in so many other ways, but she has  got to get these wardrobe malfunctions sorted out.

Battling the wind: I'll happily head over to Kensington Palace with my sewing kit in hand

If needs must, I will head over to Kensington Palace with my sewing kit and stitch the  sixpences into her hems myself.
Of course, it had to happen on a day when she appeared to be wearing no nicks at all — or a thong at the very most (least).
The thing is, who still wears a thong?
My fashion friends tell me that ‘thongs are so Nineties’.
Certainly, thong sales peaked in 2003, but it seems that the Duchess is clinging onto hers —though on this delicate matter, no one is expecting a statement or clarification from Clarence House any time soon.
Poor Kate! It is a blush- making postscript to her  roaringly successful royal tour Down Under.
Will she be comforted by the fact that the member of the public who took the embarrassing snap has promised to donate her photo fees to a local fund to help fight bushfires?
I’m saying nothing.

Shirley Valentines all: A still from the 1989 film
Shirley Valentines all: A still from the 1989 film

Heartbroken Shirley Valentines have set up the website tunisianloverats.com in a bid to name and shame the men who chase after older women on holiday and pretend to fall in love with them — in the hope of getting the right to live in Britain.
It would almost be funny if it were not so sad.
Before women fall for some plausible Adonis, shouldn’t they ask themselves if they are not being hotly pursued by lovely young men at home, why are they suddenly so irresistible abroad?
Yet part of me sympathises.
Single women in their 40s are often very vulnerable, only too ready to listen to the romantic entreaties of young men.
They can be very silly, too. Not to mention sex-mad. Do they really think it is love?
Worst of all, won’t those scoundrels be thrilled to find themselves on such a website?
For them, it is a Love Asbo. Ladies, you have been warned.

Exit the dancing gran - and BGT's last hope

Dancing grandmother Paddy Jones and her dance partner Nico (pictured) have had to withdraw from this year’s Britain’s Got Talent series on ITV due to injury.
The 79-year-old has had to hang up her fishnets after doing herself a mischief in rehearsals this week.
This is another blow for BGT, which has lost more than a million viewers in an oddly lacklustre series.

And I can’t quite join in the chorus of appreciation for classical singer Lucy Kay, who’s triumphed over her past — she was bullied, apparently — to reach the BGT final.
After her winning rendition of Nella Fantasia on Wednesday night, she was asked who wrote the  song, composed by Ennio Morricone.
‘Christ knows!’ she replied.
Simon Cowell thought it was Lloyd Webber and David Walliams hadn’t a clue.
Oh dear. It almost makes me long for popera-lite singer Katherine Jenkins.
Almost.
