A Generation's Obligation: The Cycle of Peace

When 9/11 happened, I was in the fifth grade. I was ten. I didn't understand the weight of it. I only knew it was horrible.

For the next 13 years of my life, I would watch the aftermath and try to understand what happened. Throughout my teens, I would cringe at the report of any other threat, and as a Muslim-American say to myself, "Please, don't let it be a Muslim. Please, not again. Please, not in the name of my religion."

Later, as a young adult, while my head focused on reciting the names of all the innocent lives lost in the 9/11 attacks for a memorial ceremony, it also ached for the lives of other innocent people who were killed in our counterterrorism efforts, whose names I would never know and whose names may never be recorded.

I sometimes would think that those whose lives were horrendously cut short on 9/11 would say of the killing of innocents in our following wars, "Please, don't let it be a civilian like me. Please, not again. Please, not in the name of my death."

I'm beginning to understand that the Disease of Hatred that hit our towers that day found a way to infect people who never had that kind of hatred before. I felt that blood-hungry hatred swim around the world, poignantly charging words and aiming guns.

My generation has endured a cycle of violence. We have seen religion blamed, cultures blamed, and on all sides bloody fingers. We have felt the loss of innocent lives, near and distant. Every generation has seen their own share of violence, but there is something so tangible about the way we have access to and can impact information now. There is something about our lived experience that has the potential to overcome boundaries like never before.

Our generation is a global generation. We are clicks away from one another at all times. With this era of communication comes great privileges and greater challenges. Today, I think one of our most significant challenges is to prevent the ongoing cycles of injustice, in particular those stemming from cross-cultural violence.

To think critically about what is going on in the world and the issues that are affecting people's everyday lives, even when those people do not live beside you: this is the obligation of my generation. And there is perhaps nothing longer-standing and more relevant in this moment than the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

As the loss of innocent lives is in the hundreds and ongoing, it is the obligation of our generation to examine the sides we take and the information we choose to take into account. A recent report (July 20) by the UN announced that 375 Palestinians have been killed, including 36 women and 83 children. Over 3,000 Palestinians have been injured, and more than 100,000 Palestinians are now displaced. More than one million have limited or no access to water or sanitation services.

The other night, I heard the announcement of the death of the first Israeli soldier as ground invasions began (the Israeli death toll recently reached 20, two civilians and the rest military). The CNN reporter ended the piece by stating that there were 60,000 Palestinian children in need of psychosocial support.

My mother's words haunt me as we watched the same newscast. "You and your brother are upset by the news, but it is not news to us," she said. "This has been going on for not only all of your lives, but all of ours, too."

I do not want to say that to my children.

I do not want to continue to watch the news, and as deaths of Palestinians are announced in this crushing offensive by Israel say, "Please, not another innocent child. Please, not again. Please, make it stop."

In this moment, the death tolls will inevitably grow if Israel's Operation Protective Edge continues. It is up to us to decide what the death tolls will mean to us, and the numbers should demonstrate what they truly are: a grave injustice to humanity.

For those who have been so shamefully silenced by this violence, we can create cycles of peace. There is a generation that has our voices not only at our mouths, but also at our fingertips. Our generation has the ability to be louder than anyone has ever been before by creating a chorus of, "Please, never again."

"Please, no more."

Hot Mic Moments Are Nothing New

Most communications professionals in politics have a story to tell about the time their boss was caught - or nearly caught - on a live microphone. We have leapt across tables, knocked over podiums, or grabbed a principal's lapel to muffle a microphone when realizing that an unscripted moment was about to occur.

It is ironic that for an industry so often criticized for canned talking points, it is a significant faux pas for U.S. politicians to be caught with a "hot mic." Yet when the moment happens, members of the media are also quick to create a process story out of the blunder.

Carly Fiorina, who ran as the GOP candidate to unseat incumbent Senator Barbara Boxer in 2010, was behind in the polls when she got caught on a hot mic making fun of Boxer's hair. While it was possible to point to the incident as evidence that Fiorina was both careless and catty, the gaffe did not do anything to change the discourse around the election. That didn't stop cable television hosts from highlighting it. Rather than focus on differences in the platforms of the candidates, pundits spent more than a few media cycles poking fun at the candidate and at a race that could now be more easily dismissed as a cat fight among two women.

Democrats have had their fair share of hot mic moments as well. In fact, TIME has compiled a list of the "Top 10 Hot Mic Moments" in history, including President Obama's comments, prior to a television interview, regarding Kanye West's misbehavior at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards ("He's a jackass") and Vice President Biden's remarks at the announcement of passage of the president's healthcare legislation ("This is a big f_____ deal").

Game changers? No. Embarrassing? Sure. But instead of a process story about an unforced error that did not affect any substantive narrative, don't we deserve to have the media focus on substance?

For example, this weekend Secretary of State John Kerry taped interviews on all five major Sunday morning shows to discuss the ongoing turmoil between Israel and Hamas among other topics - important issues affecting our international security and policy that deserve serious debate and consideration. But when Secretary Kerry was caught on a hot mic having a conversation with a staffer as the Fox News Sunday cameras were gearing up, the pundits directed their attention elsewhere.

In commenting on the ongoing assaults, Kerry was overheard saying, "It's a hell of a pinpoint operation," as his aide comments that, "It's escalating significantly."

Anchor Chris Wallace called the hot mic comments an "extraordinary moment of diplomacy." Really? The secretary commenting on innocent civilians being caught in the crossfire might be significant if he hadn't said it before, but there is nothing Kerry said in the hot mic moment that he didn't say on camera on Fox. Or Face the Nation. Or Meet the Press. Or in any of the press he has done over the past several days. But that didn't stop more than a dozen news organizations from posting independent stories about the "gaffe" within a few hours of the taping.

Process stories about a hot mic moment in which nothing was said that differed from on the record comments. What a waste.

There are hot mic moments that matter, and there are hot mic moments that serious reporters should leave for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. When Congressman Michael Grimm threatened NY1 reporter Michael Scotto after an interview about the president's 2014 State of the Union address turned to local topics, it was relevant. The altercation not only gave voters insight into Grimm's character, it foreshadowed the campaign finance probe for which he has now been indicted.

But pieces focused on chit-chat about hairstyles, pop culture and a few curse words? "Breaking" news segments about a diplomat speaking to a staff member in the face of serious global crises about the urgency that he is moments away from saying on air? We should all find something better to do with our weekend.

'Feeling very blessed': Corrie star Katherine Kelly and husband expecting a baby... just a month after eloping to Vegas

Actress Katherine Kelly and her new husband Ryan Clark are expecting their first child together - less than a month after tying the knot in Las Vegas.
The former Coronation Street actress, 33, decided to announce her impending motherhood on Twitter in the early hours of Sunday morning.
She tweeted: 'Ryan & I are overjoyed to announce that we are expecting a baby! Feeling very blessed!'

Katherine's baby news came just a few hours after she joined some of her former Corrie co-stars at Catherine Tyldesley's 30th birthday party in Manchester on Saturday night.
Arriving with new husband Ryan, there was no sign of Katherine's small baby bump in her black maxi dress as she arrived at the Great John Street Hotel in Manchester.
However, her burgeoning belly was visible as she attended the Jasper Conran show at London Fashion Week on Friday.

Katherine and Australian digital analyst manager Ryan, also 33, dated for two years before eloping to Las Vegas on August 20.
They tied the knot in a low-key bash at the Little Church of the West in Nevada's Sin City.
Speaking about her nuptials to Hello! magazine last month, she enthused: 'The day was everything we hoped it would be - no fuss, low-key, sunshine and just us.

'We wanted to enjoy the day without all the usual planning and pressure. We just wanted to let it roll, so it had an on-the-run feel to it.
‘We'd been laughing and joking all day and then suddenly everything seemed to stop and we tried to get the words "I do" out without becoming emotional wrecks. It was awesome. I'll never forget that moment for the rest of my life.'
Katherine left Corrie last year after six years of playing troubled Becky McDonald.
Earlier this year, she played Lady Mae Loxley in Mr Selfridge, which she is expected to reprise for the upcoming second series.

Joe Scarborough Denies Rumors About 'Angling' For David Gregory's Spot

Joe Scarborough denied on Thursday that he and his "Morning Joe" co-host Mika Brzezinski have been pushing to replace David Gregory on "Meet the Press."

Page Six reported on Wednesday that Gregory's run at the Sunday show could be up right after the midterm elections. Since then, rumors have been swirling about who might take his place. Several media outlets reported that the top contenders include NBC News’ chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd as well as the "Morning Joe" duo.

Lloyd Grove at the Daily Beast reported that NBC sources told him that Scarborough and Brzezinski had been "aggressively angling" to replace Gregory, stating that they "believed they had an understanding" with NBC News that they would claim the spot. NBC insiders also said that the network was hesitant to put Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, at the head of a traditionally nonpartisan show, Page Six reported.

Scarborough said in a tweet Thursday that the rumors were "false."

Lauren Silverman puts a protective hand on her bump on lunch date... as it's revealed she sent message of reassurance to Simon Cowell's harem

Following their romantic reunion on the French Riviera last month, Simon Cowell and his pregnant girlfriend Lauren Silverman have spent the past few weeks on opposite coasts of the U.S.
While the music mogul has been busy working on his TV show in Los Angeles, the expectant brunette has been taking care of her son, who is at school in New York.
Despite the distance between them, it appears Lauren is very much happy with the state of their romance as she stepped out in Manhattan a few days ago.

The divorcee, 36, looked glowing as she rubbed her bump protectively as she lunched with relatives at Cafe Classico in Midtown on Thursday.
Currently four months pregnant, the mother-of-one showed off her changing figure in a black wrap dress, which she teamed with a pair of silver sandals.
Lauren was spotted out and about as it emerged she contacted members of Simon's harem of ex-girlfriends in attempt to soothe over any tensions between them.

After years as just another member of the group of women, Lauren is now in prime position as girlfriend and future mother to the 53-year-old mogul's child.
News of Lauren and Simon's affair and her subsequent pregnancy was said to have rocked the close-knit group when news first became public on July 31.
When the news first broke, Sinitta, 49, appeared to tweet about the situation, writing that something had happened that was 'half miracle, half nightmare'.
Following suggestions Lauren was a 'gold-digger', she decided to sent each women a text message insisting she was genuinely in love with Simon, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Although Lauren intended the message to the likes of Sinitta, Mezhgan Hussainy and Jackie St Clair was intended as friendly, some of the women remain unsure.
A source told The Sunday Mirror: 'It was a nice try by Lauren but she’ll have to try harder. She can’t just come in and expect to be everybody’s best friend, not when Simon’s girlfriends have known him for years before she was even on the scene.
'They all care about him and want to protect him – and they’re still sceptical about her motives. She’s trying to keep her enemies close.'

Earlier this month, Simon spoke about his romance with Lauren - who was married to now ex-husband Andrew when they first starting dating - and his impending fatherhood.
He told Ellen DeGeneres: 'Because everyone knows, it was well documented, it was kind of uncomfortable. You know, the situation.
'But these things happen and everything is kind of calm now and I'm happy. I'm actually happier than I've ever been.
'I can't blame the media because they've got a juicy story, but there was a lot of stuff said about her, that she trapped me and that she's a gold digger. Absolute nonsense. She's a great girl, but it was awkward because of the circumstances.'
He also made a rare public declaration of love, telling People: 'I love her and I love the fact that I'm having this baby.'

David Moyes SACKED! Moyes is axed after face-to-face meeting with United chief Woodward as legend Giggs steps in until end of the season

David Moyes has been sacked by Manchester United with immediate effect.
Chief executive Ed Woodward arrived at Carrington at 8am on Tuesday morning to inform the Scot face-to-face of the news.
Moyes had already been informed of his fate and thanked club staff at the training complex in anticipation of his departure. The players were not present at the time.
A tweet on the club's official Twitter account read: 'BREAKING: Manchester United announces that David Moyes has left the club. The club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role.'
Ryan Giggs will take temporary charge for the rest of the season as interim manager.
It emerged on Monday that United's owners, the Glazer family, had lost patience with Moyes after a dismal season that has seen the reigning Barclays Premier League champions slump to seventh in the table.
The final straw was Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Everton, their 11th in the Barclays Premier League this season, and a result that left the title holders 13 points off the Champions League places.

Alexandra Shipp Replaces Zendaya In Aaliyah Lifetime Biopic

Lifetime found a new actress to replace Zendaya in its Aaliyah biopic. The iconic R&B singer will now be played by Nickelodeon star Alexandra Shipp, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed, before Lifetime tweeted the news:

Zendaya backed out of the made-for-TV movie last month and her rep confirmed she was "no longer involved with the film." At the time, Lifetime's PR department released a statement on Twitter: "We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold." She was scheduled to record four songs to appear in the movie.

Production will resume this summer and Lifetime still plans on releasing "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B" in the fall as planned. The project is set to trace Aaliyah's career from her first performance on "Star Search" to her untimely death in 2001. She was killed in a plane crash at 22. Wendy Williams has also joined the TV movie as an executive producer.

News of the biopic made waves with members of the late singer's family. Her cousin, Jomo Hankerson, has said publicly that they would make it hard for the network to gain rights, masters and images for the film. He also told the New York Daily News that members of the family weren't happy the film would be made for TV instead of the big screen. “This needs A-list actors, A-list talent that can breathe life into what we think is a phenomenal story," he said in June.

Shipp is best known for the Nickelodeon series "House of Anubis" in which she plays Kara Tatiana Rush. She is also featured in Season 2 of "Ray Donovan."

Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco expecting their first baby

Monaco's Prince Albert II and his South African wife Charlene are expecting their first child together, they announced today.
The 36-year-old South African former Olympic swimmer and her husband, 56, issued a statement through the royal palace expressing their 'immense joy'.
It said: 'Prince Albert and Princess Charlene have the immense joy to announce they are expecting a happy event. The birth is due at the end of the year.'
Pregnant: Princess Charlene of Monaco and Prince Albert II at the Formula One Grand Prix Gala Dinner in Monte Carlo last week

The news is sure to please the palace and end recent speculation about why Charlene, after nearly three years of marriage with 56-year-old Albert, had not yet provided a legitimate heir to the jet-set European principality.
The couple married in July 2011 in an opulent ceremony in the principality of Monaco, stomping ground of the rich known for its Grand Prix car race.
Prince Albert is the son of the late Prince Rainier III and actress Grace Kelly. Kelly set aside a career in Hollywood to become Princess Grace but died after a car crash in 1982.
Before her marriage into the ancient House of Grimaldi, whose family members have ruled since 1297, Charlene Wittstock was a national champion swimmer from South Africa.

The couple met when Albert presided over a swimming race in 2000 in which Wittstock was competing.
The royal family has been most recently in the news over the film that kicked off the Cannes Film Festival this month, 'Grace of Monaco' by French director Olivier Dahan.
The film starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly was derided by Albert and his two sisters, Princess Caroline and Princess Stephanie, as 'a farce' based on 'erroneous and dubious historical references'.
The Duchess of Cambridge became pregnant with Prince George around a year-and-a-half after she married Prince William in April, 2011.
Albert is believed to be the father of at least two children out of wedlock and supports them from his multi-million pound fortune.
However, neither Jazmin Grace Grimaldi, who graduated from Fordham University's Bronx, New York, last month or Alexandre Coste, 10, has a claim to the throne.
Until the baby is born, the Monegasque heir remains Princess Caroline - Albert's older sister - and then her eldest son, Andrea Casiraghi, who's recently become a father.
The Monaco baby news is likely to set off a frenzy in the fashion press as to how she will dress her bump.
Demure Princess Charlene is known for her elegant fashion style, patronising designers such as Giorgio Armani, who designed her couture wedding dress.
Since her marriage, Charlene is styled as Her Serene Highness The Princess of Monaco. The previous holder of the style was her husband's mother, Grace Kelly, who died in 1982.

Peter and Emily were seen out in Surrey together on Wednesday and it's clear they are happier than ever.

'They like Pete but this was not the path they had planned for their daughter.'
However another source said that Emily's mother and father are happy with the union.
A source said that Pete is 'really close' to Emily's father Ru.
Adding: 'They have a good friendship, so it came completely out of the blue for someone to say otherwise. Ru would never have introduced Emily to Pete if he had an issue with his lifestyle...He spent two weeks in Zanzibar with Pete in June without Emily and they had a great time.'
The couple, who announced their happy news two weeks ago, have been dating for around a year after meeting through her father, a surgeon, who operated on Peter in 2010 to remove kidney stones.

Illinois GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Used Doctored News Headlines In TV Ad

Bruce Rauner (R), an Illinois businessman and gubernatorial candidate, is being called out for running a television ad with some altered news headlines about incumbent Gov. Pat Quinn (D), according to the Chicago Tribune.

In the ad, called "Headlines," the Rauner campaign shortened and even changed headlines that it attributed to various news organizations. One headline originally read "Quinn, Rauner spar on education in 1st 2014 event," and was altered in Rauner's ad to read “Quinn education cuts lead to teacher layoffs and larger class sizes.”

Another headline said "Quinn doubles down on tax hike gamble" and was used in Rauner's ad with the word "gamble" dropped.

The Chicago Tribune says three other headlines were altered in the ad as well.

Quinn said on Thursday that the ad, which first appeared the day before, highlights what he views as Rauner's "pattern of dishonesty."

Rauner spokesman Mike Schrimpf said in an email to The Associated Press that "the TV ad does not say everything that appears on screen was a headline."

"Due to time and space constraints, some of the phrases had to be condensed," he added.

Quinn is seen as vulnerable in his re-election bid. His anti-violence initiative is facing a federal probe due to allegations of mismanagement.

Megan Fox and her husband Brian Austin Green are expecting their second child together.
The couple, who are already parents to 10-month-old son Noah, are said to be "very happy" with the news.
A representative for 27-year-old Megan told New York Post's Page Six: 'I can confirm Megan is expecting her second child with her husband Brian. They are both very happy.'

The couple first started dating in 2004 after they met on the set of Hope & Faith when she was just 18 years old and Brian was 30.
They originally became engaged in 2006, but called it off in 2009, only to reunite in 2010 and walk down the aisle.
Megan and Brian, 40, wed in a private ceremony in Hawaii in June, 2010.
They welcomed son Noah in September last year and are now adding to their brood, while Brian is also father to 11-year-old son Kassius from his past relationship with actress Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo.

When Noah was born Megan and Brian managed to keep his birth a secret for two weeks but Megan eventually confirmed rumours on her Facebook page, writing: 'We are humbled to have the opportunity to call ourselves the parents of this beautiful soul and I am forever grateful to God for allowing me to know this kind of boundless, immaculate love.
'Thanks to those of you who wish to send your positive energy and well wishes.'
She has since spoken out about her wish to have more children and give Noah a sibling.
Happy families: The pair originally started dating in 2004, when Megan was 18 and Brian was 30, they since went on to get married in Hawaii in 2010

The Transformers star told Marie Claire earlier this year: 'All I wanted to do my whole, whole life was have a baby and, now, I've finally done it.
'I just want to give Noah as much of myself as I can. And I want to have more kids. That is where my heart is.'
Megan is currently on set in New York filming as reporter April O'Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film has created an excited buzz amongst both old and new fans, but everyone still has almost a year to wait before they see the movie.

The film is not slated for release until June 2014.
This time around the plot involves aliens who invade Earth and inadvertently spawn the mutated reptile warriors, the Ninja Turtles, who rise up against them to defend the world.
This is Megan's first movie since giving birth to her and husband Brian Austin Green's son Noah in September.

'He looks, I would say, 70 percent like Brian,' the actress told Ellen DeGeneres back in December. 'He was his identical twin when he came out [but] recently he's been getting chubbier and everyone's like, "Oh, he's so chubby -- now he looks like you."
'I don’t know how I should take that,' Megan joked.
