NASS hands over corrected version of the 2016 budget to Presidency

The  corrected version of the 2016 budget was handed to the Presidency through the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters Senate, Senator, Ita Enang yesterday.
The Deputy Chairman of House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Jonathan Gaza, while briefing journalists at the assembly complex said:
“A committee was set up, which was in the papers and was headed by the deputy speaker. Members from the Senate as well as the executive arm looked at the budget and I believe the resolutions have been transmitted or rather the resolutions have been submitted to the President. “I am quite optimistic and I enjoin all other Nigerians, including yourselves, to be as optimistic as me that in the very near future, this budget will be signed into law.”
When asked if the budget submitted was an amendment he said:
“Well, I honestly believe that we have to be quite careful with our choice of words. “Over time, there have been differences and both arms of government had sat down to look at what those issues are. Most importantly, what we want is to see our country and our economy moving forward.”

Woman with breast cancer wins the lottery twice in less than two months

A North Carolina woman, Gina Short, who has been battling breast cancer for 6 years and is still undergoing chemotherapy has won the lottery for the second time in less than three months.
In February, Gina won $1 million in the Ultimate Millions second-chance drawing which she said she was going to use to pay for her treatments. She said she was thankful for the lottery winnings because had been given a second chance to live. At that time she said:

"I have a second chance," she told Fox 29 at the time. "That's what my whole life is about, second chances."
Then in early April she told her husband, Len Short to buy a ticket for the All or Nothing prize of $250,000 because she was "feeling lucky"

Then unbelievably on April 29 their numbers won...again!
"We checked the same ticket six or seven times because we thought we misread it." "We're still in disbelief mode," lottery winner Gina Short said.
She added that the prize would help her "truly live." Now that the couple has claimed Gina's second lottery prize, their disbelief has been replaced by gratitude.
"For us to have the good fortune of winning not just one big prize but two, we are just very thankful for that," Len Short said.

Saraki calls for legislation to address marternal mortality on International day of the midwife

As the Inaugural Global Midwifery Conference in Nigeria rounds off in Abuja, in commemoration of the International Day of the Midwife, the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki through the Special Assistant on New Media to President of the Senate, Bamikole Omishore , has congratulated midwives across the nation for their contributions towards the healthcare of Nigerian women and newborns.
The Senate President, who is a medical doctor by profession, stated that over the years, midwives have helped to improve the maternal healthcare options available to Nigerian women.

Saraki further stated
“According to data available from UNICEF, the deaths of newborn babies in Nigeria represents a quarter of the total number of deaths of children under-five.”

In this regard, as the event hosted by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses hand Midwives (NANNM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Wellbeing Foundation Africa rounds off, Saraki stated that the Senate and the 8th National Assembly would work out ways to partner with organisations that help to promote the life-saving work of midwives across the nation.

“As we mark International Day of the Midwife 2016,” Saraki said, “The 8th Assembly will partner with organisations and other stakeholders to provide legislation that will help to strengthen the efforts of midwives in Nigeria, to enable them provide better support for expecting mothers.”

According to UNICEF, a Nigerian woman’s chances of dying from pregnancy and childbirth is 1 in 13, and presently, only about 20 per cent of health facilities offer emergency obstetric care and only 35 per cent of deliveries are attended by skilled birth attendants.

Arsenio Hall sues SinĂ©ad O’Connor for $5m over drug claims

Actor and talk show host Arsenio Hall is suing SinĂ©ad O'Connor for libel after the singer's recently accused him of being Prince's drug dealer for years and for spiking her marijuana at Eddie Murphy's house.
She made the accusation after news spread that there may have been a possibility that painkillers or hard drugs may have had a cause in the sudden death of Prince who died recently.
She took to her Facebook page on May2nd to make the accusation. She wrote:

O'Connor said she reported Hall to the Carver County Sheriff's office. "Expect their call. They are aware you spiked me years ago at Eddie Murphy's house."

She said this incident allegedly happened in 1991.
Then on May 3rd, she took to her Facebook page to elaborate on the whole incident.
She said Hall had invited her to a party at Murphy's home on the night of the Grammy Awards. O'Connor chose to not attend the ceremony, which she claims made Hall act maliciously towards her.
"In his unfathomable narcissism, he has deduced that my not attending is specifically an act against him, and all that he holds dear," she wrote.
"This is like, the second time we've hung out." Her tense description of their night — which presumably took place in 1991 since she states that her winning of a Grammy Award further provoked Hall — ended with O'Connor alleging that Hall had offered her laced marijuana and "actually did stick his tongue in my mouth too." Hall's complaint, which was filed in Los Angeles on May 5th, calls O'Connor a "desperate attention-seeker" and calls her story "outlandish defamatory lies."
She wrote a very long and detailed post about the whole incident on her Facebook page.

However, Hall has denied all of O'Connor's claims and said O'Connor has a history of "bizarre, unhinged internet rants."

Hall also goes into detail on the contentious relationship he believes O'Connor had with Prince, alleging they had a "feud" and once engaged in " a violent fistfight" with the late singer where O'Connor "spat on him repeatedly after she told Prince 'to go f**k himself.'"

Hall is suing for $5 million in compensatory damages.

Alligator crawls up to South Carolina home and attempts to ring the doorbell

Gary Rogers, a South Carolina resident was out walking his dog in his neighborhood of Foxbank Plantation when he came across an alligator prowling the area and crawling across the front yard of homes. He decided to record a video of the unusual visitor on his phone as the large reptile headed to a front porch.

Rogers told local media: 'He was walking around in front of a couple of houses down in the cul-de-sac area. So we went down.'
Rogers' video shows the gator climbing up to homeowner Jamie Bailey's front door and attempting to ring the doorbell.

'I didn't know alligators could actually climb. And this alligator looked like he was really trying to make an attempt to get over the fence and into this woman's pool in the backyard' Rogers said.

Bailey who wasn't at home at the time said while the alligator may not have gotten in, it did leave its mark on her door.
'You can see where he was scratching all around the door here. And then there. And then you can see the scratches on the knob itself,' Bailey said as she pointed to the marks.
Rogers who recorded the video said the alligator wasn't a troublesome guest.
'The gator was not aggressive at all. He was just kind of trying to find his way out,' he told the television station.

'I mean he was caught between fences, in between a couple of houses. Had no place to go. Went around the air conditioner a couple of times.'
