Saraki calls for legislation to address marternal mortality on International day of the midwife

As the Inaugural Global Midwifery Conference in Nigeria rounds off in Abuja, in commemoration of the International Day of the Midwife, the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki through the Special Assistant on New Media to President of the Senate, Bamikole Omishore , has congratulated midwives across the nation for their contributions towards the healthcare of Nigerian women and newborns.
The Senate President, who is a medical doctor by profession, stated that over the years, midwives have helped to improve the maternal healthcare options available to Nigerian women.

Saraki further stated
“According to data available from UNICEF, the deaths of newborn babies in Nigeria represents a quarter of the total number of deaths of children under-five.”

In this regard, as the event hosted by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses hand Midwives (NANNM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Wellbeing Foundation Africa rounds off, Saraki stated that the Senate and the 8th National Assembly would work out ways to partner with organisations that help to promote the life-saving work of midwives across the nation.

“As we mark International Day of the Midwife 2016,” Saraki said, “The 8th Assembly will partner with organisations and other stakeholders to provide legislation that will help to strengthen the efforts of midwives in Nigeria, to enable them provide better support for expecting mothers.”

According to UNICEF, a Nigerian woman’s chances of dying from pregnancy and childbirth is 1 in 13, and presently, only about 20 per cent of health facilities offer emergency obstetric care and only 35 per cent of deliveries are attended by skilled birth attendants.

Beyoncé takes a stand for LGBT rights

Beyonce has taken a stand for LGBT rights a month after North Carolina passed a law saying citizens can only use the public restroom for the gender listed on their birth certificate. Beyonce spoke out against the new law on her website...see what she wrote after the cut!

North Carolina has been drawing the attention of the masses for new legislation that blocks cities and local governments from passing anti-discrimination measures that could protect gay and transgender people.
It all began earlier this year when Charlotte passed a decree expanding North Carolina’s anti-discrimination laws allowing LGBT people protection in places of public accommodation. The ordinance, which was set to go into effect on April 1st, would allow transgender people to use the bathrooms of the gender they identify as, amongst other progressive rights.
Rather than accepting the progression in LGBT rights, that same night, legislators returned to the state house to overrule the ordinance that would ban discrimination against LGBT people. At a special session, North Carolina’s General Assembly proposed and passed the House Bill 2 (HB2) — what has now come to be known as the “Bathroom Bill.”
As The Formation World Tour makes its stop in the Tar Heel state in the midst of such a controversial time, we think it is important for us to bring attention to those who are committed to being good and carrying on the message of equality in this core of controversy.
Among the many organizations doing the good work to get this bill overturned, there is Equality NC, a local organization dedicated to securing equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) North Carolinians.
To accomplish these goals, Equality NC tirelessly lobbies the North Carolina General Assembly, executive branch, and local governments, broadcast LGBT news, stories and content, and mobilize our communities on issues that matter, including marriage equality, parental rights, inclusive anti-bullying policies, employment discrimination, hate violence, privacy rights, sexuality education, adoption, domestic partnerships, and HIV/AIDS.
Learn more about how you can support Equality NC by donating, volunteering, becoming an ambassador, attending an event, or simply spreading the word!

FFG Eats: Bottomless Brunch at Hix Mayfair

Bottomless Brunch London
Bottomless Brunch London
"What do you mean by 'bottomless,' exactly?" asked my friend down from Scotland. How do I accurately describe this weekend tradition without sounding like a lush? The correct description of a Bottomless Brunch in my twenties would have been, "it's a challenge to see how much you can drink in a two hour seating." I like to think in my thirties I've matured into a person who believes this is less of a challenge and more of an opportunity to enjoy more than your average number of cocktails as you catch up with friends and family over a glorious meal. In Los Angeles and New York, I've sat for more bottomless brunches than I could possibly recall. And yes, I'm proud to say I can actually recall them all. I'm not sure I can say the same for all of my friends. But, in London the Bottomless Brunch almost seems an oddity. There have been a few, scattered here and there with good champagne and light eats. But, I have yet to come across an establishment that had me wishing to make a regular reservation. Well, that was until I stepped into Hix Mayfair to experience their version of the Bottomless Brunch

Last Saturday, the man and I slid into our green leather booth at Hix Mayfair, with a view of one of my favorite Tracey Emin neons, and we ordered our first Bloody Mary of the morning. The "jolly" cart was rolled over to our table and we were presented with a cocktail making show and an introduction to our first sip of pure milk vodka. I kid you not. It was incredible and Hix Mayfair have most definitely showcased their talents at mixing a fantastic cocktail.

Now, here's the nitty gritty. You have two hours at your table for Bottomless Brunch at Hix Mayfair. During that time you can choose to either have Bloody Marys or a champagne cocktail (ours was made with rhubarb syrup... delicious). You can even mix the two should you choose. But, there's more. This isn't just a cocktail fueled morning. One may choose from a three course menu featuring supreme specialities from the kitchen of uber chef Mark Hix. From sweet to savory, there's something here for everyone.

My recommendation is to get a great big group of people together for such an occasion. In my experience, six or more is the magic number. This is not to say that going as a couple isn't a great event in itself, but bottomless brunches are meant for crowds of people who are friends or family. Hix Mayfair has only just begun this tradition of Bottomless Brunch, but mark my words - this will become a near impossible table to book in the very near future. It's already decided it will become a regular event in this household. Maybe I'll see you there next weekend?

Info:
Bottomless Brunch at Hix Mayfair takes place every Saturday from 12-3pm. Your group may not exceed 12 people and each table setting is set for a limit of two hours. The brunch is three courses and is £50 per person.

Do you need to live in London to Blog Sucessfully?

So, I moved to Brighton over SEVEN months ago now! It's really flown by but I thought I'd answer a really common question that I get in relation to living in London and blogging. Moving away made me realise one thing - London really isn’t the be all and end all of the blogging world.

I lived in London for about 4 years. I moved there after I'd spent a year of going to London 2-3 times a week for blogging related things. One day after a long commute to London (my journey was 4 hours there and 4 back) decided that I want to live in London. So I moved, it was great and I lived their for four years and for the majority of my time I loved it. However moving there didn't really improve my blogging life at all, inf act it hindered it in so many ways that Im only realizing now Im out of the London trap!

It’s something that I see come up time and time again in blogging chats is that “you need to live in London to be a successful blogger” or “All blogging events are in London” and while it may have been the case a few years ago but in 2015 it’s simply not true.

The biggest argument I see about London being the centre of the UK bloggerverse is that that’s where brands and events are. Which is true, to some degree as thats where the majority are based and held. None the less I see events happening all over the country happening these days and little blogging meet ups from all over the UK popping up on my Twitter feed! It's so awesome to see communities growing all round the country!

I'll be completely honest... I haven't been to a blog event in years. Im not snubbing the idea of attending a blogging event although it might seem like that. Of course, I have a skewed view because Im an arguable successful blogger with already established connections with brands so I dont really NEED to go to events so much. But when I lived in London I never wanted to go into the city outside "work hours" because I always wanted to spend my evenings doing something I wanted to do with my friends!

While I do think events are useful for new bloggers to get their name out there by meeting PR’s face to face and meeting up with likeminded bloggers but I don’t think they are something that you MUST attend or something you feel you should travel halfway across the country to go to.  They simply arent worth it, there's very little value in blogging events in my opinion.  But of course it has to be noted that the best part of events has always been meeting other bloggers. It’s not the free stuff or meeting with XYZ PR or the delicious free mini burgers and champs (although that seems to now be green juices and yoga events) it was always the meeting face to face of people you follow and who's content you love.

It’s actually very rare that I attend events these days and I don’t think I’ve been to a press day since I moved to London. Press days are arguably completely useless to blogging audiences. (Personally) I think readers want see what I can buy right this second not in 3 months time. Things like this work for long lead press but not so much in the blogging world where it’s a culture of here and now.

And while yes brands are in London and yes events are often held in London but both aren’t a measure of success. If a brand wants to work with you they will get you to wherever so don’t feel you need to be on standby in London incase they call you up to work with them. Because they don't do that. While being London based is helpful for meeting brands, Id recommend setting up a whole day of meetings rather than coming in and out of London all the time.

There are plenty of bloggers out there who do incredibly well and don’t live in the city so don’t be blinkered by the promise of London for your blog because it’s not about where you live it’s what you’re blogging about. Beyond events and what really is there that London offers for bloggers that you can’t get anywhere else in the country? Blogging is based on the internet, not in London.

Another thing, London is SO expensive and you get pretty much nothing housewise for your money. My old rent was £750 a month plus bills and I had a pretty mid sized room in a 6 bedroom house share. I lived in a good location and on a nice street but its nothing compared to the place I have here in Brighton. While I obviously pay more as I have a two bedroom flat to myself pretty much anywhere outside of London you can get a much nicer space for your money. Cramping myself into a tiny one bedroom (which I lived and worked in) was horrible and stressful and there was no separation between work and rest!

So bottom line, in my opinion I dont think there is much value in moving to London unless you want to live YOUR life in London.  The best things about London are exploring new places, eating new foods, meeting new people and experiencing life. I absolutely loved my years in London and I wouldnt change them for the world. But moving specifically to enhance your blogging life? Dont do it!

(Obviously this is aimed at a UK based blogger audience, but feel free to sub London for your countries blogging big city!)

Santa Monica to Venice Beach Bicycle Ride: What to see and do while on the move

Have you ever had that moment when you know you are in the right place at the right time? From the top of your head to the tips of your toes you feel a warm glow and everything just feels in its place, perfect? For me, there is one place where I always get that warm and fuzzy feeling of "right place, right time."

That place is on the beach in Santa Monica. If we're getting specific, it's usually when I'm on a bike, riding down the beach path from Shutters on the Beach towards Venice Beach. Shutters offer a bike service to hotel guests that allows you to take on this adventure for yourself and I'll say that it's a must plan event if you're in residence. There is no better way to discover the neighbourhood and get some exercise. No matter how jet lagged I am, this is always the way I start my day. The Southern California sunshine and the salty sea breeze offer a new lease on life and one that has tempted me often to come and stay forever.

Now here are my recommendations for your Santa Monica to Venice Beach Bicycle Ride:

1. Start at the Santa Monica Pier. This is an iconic location, not to be missed. From cotton candy to twisty turny rollercoasters, there's a little something for everyone. Bring your camera! There are more family picture opportunities (or instagram gems) than you can ever be prepared for.
2. Pack your swimsuit. As you bike along the beach, the ocean will come calling. So make sure you have a suit in your bag, just in case you and some friends want to take a quick dip. Trust me, on a hot day this can be sweet relief and it's so easy. If you don't at least have the option, you'll regret it!
3. Visit the skatepark. There are some amazing skating talents to be spotted here on the beach. Ages range from five to fifty, but all deliver quite the show. Audiences gather around to take in the tricks each skater performs as they practice on the cement structure.
4. Yes, there is even graffiti on show. Local artists come to tag and occasionally you'll even catch a photoshoot or two taking place in conjunction (notice the guitarist being shot on the left as a tagger leaves his mark on the right). Venice Beach has amazing wall art so keep an eye or two open and ready to discover.
5. Architecture! The beach houses on the bike ride from Santa Monica to Venice Beach are sensational. You will see quite literally everything when it comes to design. From modern to traditional, there are some rather unexpected surprises. Start day dreaming as to what you'd like to own for yourself.
6. Stop in on Abbot Kinney and visit Abbot's Pizza. This little slice of heaven is legendary. It's my favorite place to grab a sneaky treat after biking away the calories.
7. Go hunk watching. Ladies and gents, there are surfers everywhere you look. Keep the catcalls to yourself, but there's no harm in watching, right? It's all so California...and I love every minute of it!
8. If you're out at breakfast, stop into Joe's on Abbot Kinney for a bottomless Mimosa and the best Sunday brunch ever - just saying!
